how well does the original zelda hold up?
>>
Twilight Princess is the worst video game ever made.
>>
Pretty well. Its one of the few Zelda titles with real challenge. Though there is some cryptic unfair shit, especially in the second quest.
>>
Pretty well if you're not a pussy who can't handle old graphics and a little bit of exploring.
>>
It's fun. But you're making a big mistake asking /v/, most people here are too underaged to like anything before 6th gen. Go ask /vr/.
>>
the enemies are obviously very basic but the world and level design is still good. second quest is great for people looking to get lost in a game
>>
>>333726907
Not very
>>
It's a decent mobile game, something like 7.2/10, certainly worth playing

it's good if you're not a casual but you need to go online and google which bush to set on fire
>>
All the secrets are hinted at in game, and the manual gives you the location of the first two areas. It's something you either be a casual about and look up, or you bring a notebook with you.

As long as it hasn't been sitting in the sun, the casing should still be quite sturdy.

I'm using my copy of Zelda II as a coaster.

I did get to the final boss in minish cap though.

I hated Zelda back in the NES days. It was so barebone and ugly-looking. It also had a weird following. I'm talking 40-year old Linux nerds-type.

Link to the Past is the first Zelda that brought Zelda to the mainstream and actually made it good. That's when I saw a ton of 8-12 year olds come into the fold.

>>
If you actually like videogames, it holds up pretty nicely.

And as an anon said, Zelda is fucking cool to play on a handheld
>>
>>333726907
I didn't really care for it that much. Sure, you have completely free reign to go anywhere (if you have the tools), but exploration loses its point when there's nothing interesting to see/do.

And the basic gameplay loop of jousting with your sword/shield isn't very fun, so it really feels like it needs something else. more defined locations, cooler bosses, better weapons, NPCs to spout story at you, any one of these would help a lot.

The best part of the game is the dungeons, when you have to do mild puzzle-solving and the enemies are a threat, but everything else just feels like I'm wasting time trying to get back to the fun parts of the game.

it has too many cryptic and arbitrary shit, there is no way you would find most of the crap without a guide

otherwise it's pretty fun, but there will be no better Zelda game than A Link to the Past ever.

No, there wasnt. not with the game release. NintendoPower kicked out a cheatsheet map later but the game box had a map and told you where levels 1 and 2 were and thats it.

None of the heart containers, none of the "Its a secret to everybody" stuff. No silver sword. No power bracelet. No old lady note for potions. Nothing.

it's not as cryptic as you babbies are making it out to be

it was originally released with an informative manual, and a map that told you exactly where the first 4 dungeons are, and areas with hidden stuff is
>>
Its good
Fuck the wizrobes though, the ones that move around, they always give me trouble
>>
>>333730301
Wrong again. FF came with a world map and bestiary. Thats IT.

Again, Nintendo Power came out with a cheatsheet map and boss guide MUCH LATER but it wasnt included in the box.
>>
>>333726907
It plays exactly like it did in 1986.
>>
>>333726907
It holds up very well. The controls aren't really frustrating by today's standards (like many NES platformers) and the world and dungeons still feel pretty big. The only thing people might have an issue with is that some of it can be quite cryptic. There's also the issue that you might run out of bombs/rupees when you really need them. Honestly any person playing it for the first time shouldn't have any problems beating the game, especially if they use a guide.
>>

You had to buy that shit separately, youngfag. Zelda came with a manual and a map. Final Fantasy came with a manual.

The only game that I can think of that came with the strategy guide included as standard was Earthbound.

Why do you think that we all had subscriptions to Nintendo Power?

Show me where in that manual it describes the statistics and strategy needed to defeat the final boss, anon.

Oh, it doesn't have that? That's because it is the manual. It gives you a mini-guide for the first part of the game because most NES owners hadn't played a game like that before, but it is not a strategy guide.

Nintendo Power volume 17 acted as a strategy guide for the game.
>>
>>333731273
granted its not full guide but it tells you a hell of alot more information on how to play than most games
if you get through the walkthrough in the manual you should have a pretty good idea on how to play the rest of the game

It's my second favorite game.

- Not one but TWO items in the first and final dungeons.
- Such balanced tempo between economy and combat that rupees serve a dual-function as arrowheads. (FUN FACT: Originally, rupees were easy to come by, which meant you would have too many arrows. It was balanced just right.)
- Randomly generated monster placement/variation so no two play-throughs are ever exactly the same, but with a stack-based drop graph so you know what you're going to get; making the "arbitrary" still subject to some degree of management.
- You can go from the first dungeon to entering the semi-final dungeon in 2 minutes.
- Difficulty that 30 years after its release still incites debate over whether it can be beaten without a guide.
- A secret on every square according to the guide.
- More nonlinear than any modern video game or indie game. This game is three DECADES old and still can't be topped by someone in their basement with modern technology. That's how much work went into it.

And it comes with a Second Quest.

Best Zelda.
Best retro game of all time.
Best video game of all time.
Except for Ocarina of Time.
>>
Good Zeldas started with link to the past.
>>
>>333731680

sure I could look things up online now but thats really not the point of the game for me
>>

In MY day, the EXPOSITION was ROUTINELY carried out by means of GAME MANUALS, which accompanied th' CARTRIDGES in their BOXES!
>>
>>333731669

I'm not disagreeing with the fact that it came with an intro for the game, but that is because the genre was new, particularly to consoles. The strategy guide was not included however. This is what is considered to be the strategy guide.

Zelda didn't even include that much, and neither did future Final Fantasy games (so far as I can remember, anyway).

I don't care much for the dungeons. I understand that having the same enemy in a room is easier on the game's limitations than having a variety of enemies, but when the late game becomes "Here's a room with 7 Darknuts. Here's a room with 6 Wizrobes. Now another room with 5 Darknuts," it gets pretty tedious, even fighting them just once. It doesn't help that many of them move almost completely randomly. A lot of the puzzles could barely be called that, and often have more to do with being thorough than being clever. They feel like the kind of dungeons you could make with procedural generation without hurting the quality much.
>>
>>333731919
To be honest, I never have either. But that's because the first time I played it on GBA I wanted to beat it so that I could beat Zelda II next and was too impatient.

And then the next two times I played through it when I was older I was going through a masochistic streak where I had to restart a game if I died. I would beat it nowadays though if I played it (after playing through Zelda 1 of course so I could keep my name).

I hate the phrase "holds up". If people are still talking about it and putting it on top 10 lists and buying it from digital download shops even though emulators exist, it probably "holds up" just fine.

There's a reason we don't talk about games like Lode Runner or Columns anymore, even though they rank up there with the other best-sellers of their respective console. But LoZ though? Come on, I play that shit on a yearly basis. It never seems to get old.

I once was of the thought that it was because of self-imposed challenge. By having you enter to get the sword, you can in turn choose not to get it, and play through the game restricted (as I think the tips and tactics guide tells you).

But the actual answer is because it's a leftover of this... The text here says "Pick your favorite weapon."

Let's be honest with the exception of Mario, all NES games aged poorly. LoZ is no exception and even then wasn't that great of a game to begin with. Zelda didn't start getting good until ALttP and it took until LA for it to get to amazing tier.

It's not as cryptic as everyone says it is. The primary reason people say it's cryptic is because they're emulating it after the fact and don't think to look at the manual. Games back then often contained important information in the manuals, and it's not the game's fault that modern gamers miss this important fact.

The best games on the system are Solbrain (shatterhand in the west) and Castlevania 3, though.
