why aren't there more games like total war? why has no developer decided to compete with CA? many people found Rome II to be a let down, especially with the terrible release.

Souls syndrome. You'll make "that Total War clone"

There are better RTT games and better grand strategy games. Nobody besides CA makes games like Total War because the mix of these two elements has always been shit and always gets in the way of the other.

what's a good RTT game that lets me control massive historical armies?

King Arthur - The Role Playing Wargame features similar style of RTT battles.
>>
>>333714034
Because it's actually quite difficult to make a game like that. There's a lot of stuff that CA gets right and does to a high standard, that basically gets taken for granted because people have little to compare it to.

Look at this shit to see what it can be like.

This. It would take several tries to get to a stable format that CA has been using for years.
Whoever does it, would have to start with samey time periods just to reuse assets as much as possible.

I absolutely HATE the turn-based overworld.

Grand strategy or bust, fuck total war

It was fucking awful. Though the graphics were nice it didn't have much else.

No. I am saying the latter is better than the former.

Also it's not "pausable real-time". It's turn-based.

he's complaining about the turn-based strategy section, the campaign map and city building andresearching army recruiting and stuff, not the 'pausable real-time' battles.

>trying to play a siege in M2
>game won't let me deploy troops where I want within the city, trying to place units in narrow streets virtually impossible until after battle has started
>enemy start to attack but after a couple of engagement the rest stand around doing nothing, slowly being picked off one by one by guard towers
>some start to charge towards to town centre, then turn back, then charge again, doing the same on an endless loop

TW is a good idea that CA have never really been able to make work properly

The AI really sucks, and always has sucked. The games are pretty damn fun when played against another human being, but because the experience is so different from playing against AI, all the casuals who can't handle human tactics stay out of the multiplayer, leaving the MP scene more or less dead.
>>
>>333715162
Yes, I get he doesn't like the turn-based component of Total War. "grand strategy or bust" is clearly a statement of his preferences but with TW already having a grand strategic component (with the turn-based component playing at strategical and grand strategical levels, real-time component being tactical and operational level of war being omitted), it seems like a weird complaint unless I look back at the dozens of Paradox fags I've previously encountered who equate "grand strategy" to the Paradox formula (province-based pausable real-time games) seen in EU/CK/Vicky/HOI or think it means something like "complex strategy game" while in fact it's a distinct level of operations at tactical-operational-strategical-grand strategical scale and has nothing to do with the game format or its complexity/depth.
>>
>>333714034
There are, they just suck. Arthur tried it. Ea had some weird card game rtt combo that was p2win. There were s bunch of older games like Celtic kings
>>
>>333715820
>it seems like a weird complaint unless I look back at the dozens of Paradox fags I've previously encountered who equate "grand strategy" to the Paradox formula

DING DING DING DING

YOU GOT IT
>>
King Arthur tried. It was pretty fun but it just didn't have the polish Total War does.

TW has a monopoly on a very specific niche and you can't really compete. It's like trying to compete with Games Workshop on tabletop war games.
>>
>>333714034
I remember Total War's battlefield AI had like ONE guy working on it
>>
I can't wait for Total War Warhammer.
