I wouldn't say redundant per se. It literally takes less than a second to glance down your screen and press what you need to press. Having played 3U and 4U for more than 1600 hours altogether, I just naturally developed a muscle memory on what to press without having to look down, provided I'm using the same touchscreen layout.
Full keyboard chat is nice though, 4U chat flopped hard with those limited texts. With that said, I have both systems so if Vita gets a MH title, I'd still buy it in a heartbeat.
