In order to have a well-written non-straight character, one must follow a very important rule: Their sexuality/gender/whatever must not define who they are. If you can write a character who just happens to be non-straight, and is otherwise an actual definable character with a personality, you're doing a good job writing wise. Alternatively, if romance is a core theme or plays an importance in a game, then the romance must be made to seem fitting and must have very slow, gradual development.
I believe a well-written non-straight character is Shinji Ikari in the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion with regards to how he interacts with Kaworu. Its very subtle, and their relationship works, however since romance is not a core importance to the plot, and since shinji is an actual character with defined personality traits, it doesn't go too far. Its good writing.
Once again to re-iterate though: Chihiro's sexuality is never brought up, and Chihiro's situation doesn't really fit as trans either.
