When I played WoW a few guilds I was in used DKP, it was ok, but the guild I was in the longest was after they introduced the 10 man things, when something dropped we decided as a group to give it to whoever it would best help.

Best system was raiding exclusively with friends or just good people and figuring loot out on a per-case basis.
Guild I ran with vanilla - wrath ran a system (obviously not in vanilla though, we used shitty dkp due to the number of people) where the interested parties would sort it out among themselves. I.E. great warlock item X drops, the warlocks decide who should get it based on need and what other loot they've already won this session, or what loot they'd rather negotiate a free-win on by passing on item X. If no easy agreement was made it would just be a straight-up roll between those who needed it, but that was rare.
System worked fine for ~5 years, kept our core raiding group intact and friendly, and was extremely open to new players and pugs. If someone was enough of a cunt to throw a tantrum when they wanted to get every single piece of gear or refused to compromise on anything, they simply didn't raid.

I made a character to play with a friend one month ago.
Managed to get raid ready in the first week.
Cleared normal the first week. Didn't get any tier.
Cleared Normal and Heroic the second week. Didn't get any tier.
Cleared Normal and Heroic the third week. No tier.
Thanks to mythic dungeons, most of my slots have a higher ilevel than they will if I ever get heroic tier.

When I played with my IRL friends I was always the tank, guild leader, and loot master and one of our friends was 10x better than anyone else at DPS. Everyone always argued that other people should get loot over him so that they could catch up but I was always on the best DPS side because why wouldn't I want him to do even more.
