I come to you /v/ in my hour of need
Just got home from work to find my computer dead
Most likely from recent lightning

It was over 15 years old so I'm ready to build a new one

PC welcomed here

Also r/buildapc should have some handy
resources too /g/ as well maybe
>inb4 leddit
While they are fags they can be helpful certainly more than the memespewers here
>>
>>333674801
I couldn't possibly ask them for advice
That's why I did it here

Then logical increments is your friend, it should have everything you need

This, plus for the love of god, shop around, research and plan this shit out.

I admit when I built my current PC, I still had a perfectly functioning one to tide me over, but I spent a good two weeks weighing my options and I saved a bunch of cash doing so.
>>
I would strongly recommend to do research instead of just asking strangers on the net to pick pc parts
Google up and read on
Cpu's, cores, clock speeds, power consumption
differences between AMD and Nvidia, and naming conventions
motherboards and what do all those numbers mean
etc...
The only thing I would say to avoid are AMD cpu's

its a joke, all of that shit is incompatible. asus's x99 mobos are nice as fuck though, set one up a couple days ago and got my 5820k to 4.5 ghz easy

>>
>>333676178
I was always interested in threads where anons were trying to make a PC run as good if not better than a ps4 but cheaper or equal

At the time I didn't really need the specs
>>
>>333676502

A lot of those builds would be struggling right now. A 750 can run Battlefield 4 better than a ps4 but it struggles on Rise of Tomb Raider even at low.
>>
I need a verdict lads

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/8bHs6h
>>
>>333676502
>>333676748

There's a problem with that, as I said in a previous thread. No two games will run the same across both platforms. Making a PC "on par" with the PS4 is outright impossible due to how varied the quality of the ports range. You're better off just getting a cheap i5 and a 960 or equivalent and call it a day if you want a strong but cheap PC.
>>
>>333676502
pretty hard to do, sony buys parts by the hundred thousands which means they get them much cheaper then you can get equivalents for. Right now you will need to spend around 600-800$ for a decent mid range gaming focused pc
>>
>>333677012
>>333676973
Is it possible to salvage some parts to save a little?

In theory, I am assuming that all is shot due to the surge and I can't check at the moment
>>
>>333677196
>15 year old computer
no, just no. the thing caps are going to pop eventually even if any of the parts work, also anything that old is not going to be compatible with anything modern.
what games or things are you looking to do with it?
>>
>>333675765
where are the pop tarts
>>
>>333677393
You just made me realize nothing of value is coming out on PC

I guess maybe Overwatch but that game looks like TF2 so the specs shouldn't be extreme
>>
I wouldn't go around asking questions on /v/
you will start a shitwar about brand loyalty

just go and the websites that >>333674801
mentioned and you'll be fine, and please remember buy what you need not what you want
>>
>>333673814
fuck all these fags op, what is your budget? i'll tell you right now the CHEAPEST you can go is $400 and that can net you an amd quad(which are kinda shit but werk) and a r9 380 if you catch a sale.

also the MOST you NEED to spend for 1080p is $900 which get you a r9 390 or gtx 970 and an i5

It depends on the gpu, nvidia generally tends to have lower power consumption over amd especially more so on low profile cards.
>>
>>333678921
I have no idea what I'm doing
Pretty novice to be honest

Is there a pre built that's cheap your recommend that you know of
>>
>>333679080
Finding new desktop computers (like Dell, HP, etc) nowadays is rare, since the average desktop has been obsoleted by laptops and all-in-one PCs, not to mention modern tablets. Looking on Staples just gives me refurbrished units with no monitors, and really weak CPUs like a third gen i3. Desktops have fallen out of the mainstream, now they're used for niche applications like gaming and workstation use.
>>
>>333679080
pre-build always skimp on power supplys and motherboards hard, its just not worth the risk of them dying on you. Building a standerd pc is not that complicated, it just take some time and a bit of reading on what goes where, hell there are sites that make sure every part you buy is compatible with eachother.
>>
>>333679383
>hell there are sites that make sure every part you buy is compatible with eachother.
I totally forgot to even put that into consideration
>>
>>333679080
I know of prebuilts from computer hardware stores which are okay, the problem with prebuilts is that a lot of them have a fucking ridiculous bottleneck, which I guess in theory can be swapped out but then what is the point of paying for the prebuilt
>>
>>333679552
yeah, it makes everything extremely easy parts wise. As its been said before, get a i5 and atleast a 960 if you want to play modern games at 1080p with decent fps for more then the next 8 months
>>
>>333679792
>more then the next 8 months
That sounds depressing
>>

>>
>>333680224

>>
>>333680290
depends, what is it?
>>333680224
you still have to pay much more for what a desktop could do for less
>>333680208
that's just how it is, I personally just get whatever the top card is every other gen, waiting on the 1080 ti right now. You can still play games fine with a midrange card if you lower settings enough, Some people feel like they have to max shit like the autist they are.
>>
You're all a bunch of faggots
>>
>>333680490
>>333680668

sorry senpai

See I have a shit pc, and I'm looking to buy a better one, but since I have little money I can only get what I can afford

the one that I have is an hp5250, cpu amd athlon 64x2 3800+ 2.0ghz, 3gb ram

I found a pretty cheap dell optiplex 760, core 2 quad 3.0 ghz, 4gb of ram

the question is if this is actually a good upgrade from the one that I have now, I wish I could get a better one but it's kinda hard for me now with college and stuff, what do you guys think?
>>
>>333681135
what is your spending limit how much does the dell cost
>>
>>333681367
I can only spend $150, and the guy wanted around $100 for the dell, so I was thinking why not?
>>
>>333681503
with that budget just buy 8gb of ram and a 750 ti
>>
>>333681572
but my current processor is kinda shitty isn't it?
>>
>>333673814

If you build computers for gayming, you're incredibly immature and should re-evaluate your life.
>>
>>333681680
>but my current processor is kinda shitty isn't it?

I would get an FX-6300 ($90) and pair up with a fifty-dolla AM3+ board.

My library's computer uses that, and I was surprised that it was so snappy. Felt like an i5.

>>

you would be going from a 05 cpu to a 08 cpu, I guess you could go with it then add 2 4gb sticks of ram to it since ram is cheap as shit if your not getting the gaymer ram

I can't stand gaymers. They always build bottom-heavy builds ("i5" + 970 GTX). Either mommy's money or impatience.

There's no real appreciation for a great build.

O, okay, now I understand.

Let me break it down for you. First part and don't forget this: You guys are all gigantic faggots. Second of all: yes, an i5 and a 3.5gb GPU is weak stuff. Classic gaymer babby build. Bottom-heavy for gaming like a dumb baboon. No real breasts for luscious comfy rendering.

What does OP even need anyway, just some play-whatever gaymen box?

If all they're going to do is browse the web, watch movies, and play games, I'd recommend something silent and low-power over the excessively stronk.
It really depends on what purpose the unit must fulfill and the level of luxury the OP wants.
>>
If you're primarily gayming never buy a locked processor/mobo. Even if you don't OC now you might later, will save you cash in the future, especially since you don't need to upgrade CPUs often for games.
