To be fair, there were a good number of areas in that game that were great, especially if you include the DLC. I would say that the areas in that game were not that bad individually, but the way all the areas connected with eachother was terrible.

There are places you can get to above and below it, in order to connect those two places the glass tube needs to be destroyed. Shooting doesn't work? If only I had some sort of BOMB. It would have to be really POWERfull though.

I'm not saying, "Hmm, I can obviously break this tube with a bomb!" I didn't think that when I played it for the first time.
I'm saying that when you check the map, you're in a new area. You were in Brinstar, but just this little, tiny, 3-screen section is in a place you haven't been yet, Maridia. Keep going, and you're back in Brinstar. That's fucking WEIRD since no other places look like that. The player goes back, starts fucking around and eventually sets off a bomb. HOLY SHIIIIT THE GLASS BROKE.

It's not obvious, but the hints are there.

The tube is a shortcut back into the 'end' of Maridia, but is entirely optional. While exploring Maridia you reach a room with the same sprites that appear when you bomb the tube, the destroyed metal ends. Not only that but immediately after the pre-smashed tube room is a map room that'd show you how there's shit above and below the unbroken tube.

It's not the first time you visit an area for a very small amount of time, and it;s the only thing you have to break like that in the game. On my first play through ever recently I definitely had to look it up .

There's actually one other tube, and it's already broken, you can get there if you go through the other end of Marida after the crashed ship.

The gravity suit is in the Wrecked Ship. If you break the tube without it you can't even get into Maridia proper. It's only useful to break the tube when you come out the end of Meridia, past the broken example, and past a map room confirming there's something above and below the tube even though the tube being on your map as you explore Meridia should be enough of a hint.

There are only three ways to progress when you reach that point though: through the exit gates (the ones in north and south brinstar) or the bidirectional tube. /v/ likes to pretend that only non-idiots managed to break the tube on the first try, but the game requires the player to challenge what they already know about destructible objects in the foreground.

If you follow the map you just posted even it should be obvious.

The Marida section from the Wrecked Ship entrance leads to only one area, that being the blast-able tube.
Yes, you can make it to Marida without the tube, but not to the parts of it that matter.

The tube is mandatory.
