ITT: Satisfying defensive mechanics in games. Not just fighters, either. Stuff like the parry in Bayonetta or the counter from Onimusha.

Unite Guts
Perfect parrying in MGR
In general anything that basically functions as a counter attack
I feel like Just Guarding and Just Releasing in DMC3/4 is this, but I've never gotten gud enough to do it.
>>333664105
Dodge offset in bayonetta was pretty sweet. It's like a defensive maneuver but you don't have to entirely stop your offense if you do it because you can continue your combo afterwards.
>>333665026
Oh fuck this so hard, if it counts.
Why don't more games do that shit? It's awesome.
Sam in general
>parrying is a bit too easy
>perfect parrying is not that hard but fuck it feels rewarding
>Zandatsu blade charging also moves you around, so effectively you can avoid attacks
guess I'm kinda cheating
also Shadow Counters in Killer Instinct
Can't top this
Dark souls parry is obligatory
>>333664105
Variable counters in TvC were so good
countering an enemy in ninja gaiden 2 and taking off a limb off theirs as a result
>>333664105
The issen from Onimusha is the best thing ever, also the guard impact from Soul Calibur is sweet.
>>333664105
>recasting with 1 shadow remaining
>monster removes it
>finish casting immediately after
>dick gets so hard
>>333666213
I wish more vidya had satisfying de-limbing and I wish it were used in boss fights.
In terms of defensive mechanics, the move they had where if you blocked an attack and moved Ryu right afterward, he'd get an afterimage effect and have a greater dodge range was great.
NG3:RE also introduced a move where you could use ki to teleport behind an enemy as they attack you. Plus there's always Steel-On-Bone, which was actually a great anti-grab mechanc.
>Cervantes's horizontal parry in Soul Calibur 1
>stand against edge of arena
>opponent tries to knock you off
>parry, spinning around him & kicking him off
>>333666604
mah nigga
>>333664105
>>333666264
>playing as Magoichi in Onimusha 2
>chaining your Issens off each other has him just doing dive rolls and shotgun blasts all over the place
>>333664105
Leaning/ducking in Thief.
Avoiding an hammer just from ducking below it, feels great.
Weaving in fight night was/is a lot of fun.
chambering in warband
>>333664105
Parrying enemy attacks is satisfyingand easyas fuck. Really well done.
I'm surprised no one mentioned Jill's emergency dodge from RE3 / MVC2, and/or pic related.
Jude's snap pivot in Tales of Xillia is great once you get the timing down. You're immortal in 1v1, constantly teleporting behind bosses and unzipping your fist.
>>333666213
Is the wii u ninja gaiden good?
Reversals
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgmvgAFFuxM
>>333670545
sorry mate the only ninja gaiden games ive played was the original, ninja gaiden/black and ninja gaiden 2. ive been wondering the same thing myself though.
>>333664105
>Stuff like the parry in Bayonetta
I preferred the method of countering in DMC: shoving a sword in their face at the right time would cancel their attack.
>>333664556
I preferred the Hole card in the game, actually. It lasted much longer and you wouldn't be hit if you knew what you were doing.
>>333670545
>>333671059
NG3:RE fixes a lot of things about the original NG3, but I'd say it's just okay. Worth playing if you're a huge NG fan but even though it's fun, it's still pretty flawed.
Combat is definitely fixed from that travesty and even has some improvements from NGB/2 with it.
>>333671171
>Hole card in the game
What were its uses? I only knew that it lets you use certain giga chips.
>>333665450
Dark souls parrying always felt like shit to me even when I got good at it. The timings all felt counterintuitive to me. When I royal guard in DMC it feels like when I have to press the button is when I should have to press the button.
Snap Pivot in the Xillia games.
Broken as hell but very satisfying to use, it can even dodge spells.

>>333664105
bayonetta is fuckin shit
main selling point: the girl
lol
>can sit in the middle of a crowd of enemies and make himself invulnerable to damage for a turn
>can damage all enemies around him, optionally with knockback
>can intentionally fall asleep, removing all status ailments
>can cast auto-life on himself
>can follow that up with a self sacrifice skill that does all his hp as damage
>can even open the battle with this with the right reaction ability that starts him off with autolife.
>can single handedly keep an entire enemy force at bay as your ranged party picks them off.
>>333672195
Sorry, I guess I was thinking of Mole, not Hole. I guess that Hole is a completely different card.
Mole lets you hide underground, popping out when firing. It lasts a lot longer than something like Invis, and while you are still vulnerable to attacks that quake the ground or run along the ground, normal shots ignore you completely when underground.
The good old C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!
Oh, and that one chip in MMBN thats a little gray statue, and when an enemy hits it, they get zapped with a lightning bolt.
>>333666604
>>333664105
Parry is shit.
KOF guard actions.
Just guard.
KOF autoguard/parry attacks
Fuck it, anything SNK did with defensive actions.
>>333671002
To this day, I still don't understand the concept of reversals.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws4AJrYxZBA
also, best boss in the game.
>>333673217
Think DaS parrying.
Cancels in Grandia.
They're less satisfying in Grandia 2 because once you level up the cancel skill to level 5, they're instant. In Grandia, they required some judgement to pull off.
Really guys?
>>333664105
Bloody Roar guard escape
CQC against the Skulls in MGSV.
parry was so "satisfying" that it killed the balance of the game.
>>333673217
In street fighter or virtua fighter?
They are both different things.
In street fighter it rewards mashing.
>>333673727
How does that work? It's button press or you need to press some directional?
>>333664105
>that blue flash
>that satisfying PSHEW
>laughing at your invincibility while the boss helplessly tries to murder you
Satisfying defensive move you say?
>>333674089
Fuck off doug.
Full screen bear grab
Viewtiful Joe where you zoomed in just before hitting the floor for Joe to flip and land on his feet dazzling the crowd
>>333674258
>>333674010
Reversal is just a term in most 2d fighters that means executing something on the first possible frame.
Dumb VF poster.
>>333674363
Does he have to parry each individual attack.... And how precise does the timing have to be?
>>333674381
What's your problem?
Reversals in street fighter is just a way to get you out of trouble.
It's literally a yolo mechanic.
>>333674498
Yes and not very.
>>333674363
whatup doug
fancy seeing you around these parts
>>333673420
To this day, I still cannot reliable RG in either DMC3 or 4. I should go back to those games.
>>333674363
Oh hey. It's the scrub that got bodied by floe's shitty Gief on stream.
>>333674498
You have to parry each hit and know how many hits a move will have in it because if you mash it an extra parry animation might come out and whiff, leaving you open as hell to attack on most stuff. I've had vega players be able to block a crHP after they get parried like that though
>>333674609
not much how bout u
>>333674795
floe's still a good player compared to me tho, 'course i got rekt
>>333664105
I really liked how the parry feels in god of war. It's easy as shit but on very hard you have to pretty much parry every attack.
>>333674703
Train in the mission 18.
When the boss is throwing the black balls jump and parry or when he's kicking/punching the stage.
>>333674089
>>333674363
Fucking nice
>>333674331
That was called Viewtiful Forever and yes, it was fucking great. Shame it was only ever useful on Kids mode, because it was stylish as fuck, if easily exploitable.
>>333674583
You can reversal a jab you fucking tard.
>>333675051
DMC3 or 4?
>>333664105
I love the counter system in the Batman splinter cell games...
>>333674498
3 frame window for the first parry, 7 frame window for each subsequent parry.
>>333675000
>not much how bout u
was watching your sf4 vids again today and was having a laff at the rage quitters
>>333675000
His Gief was ass, though. It was Ultra Bronze level at best and you fell for everything. You were DPing from like 3 feet away.
>>333675081
That's the point?
>>333670545
It's inferior to the PS3 version but still better than the vanilla NG3.
Wii U version of NG3RE has more bugs and frame rate problems.
>>333675189
It's a term, not a property.
Reversal no more rewards mashing than literally anything else because it isnt a reward.
>>333675142
DMC4, it's pretty satisfying when you get the hang of it.
Counter Breakers
>>333675324
I'll try it out once I go back to it.
>>333675175
yeah but i suck. also versus grapplers. i think his pressure was good though and he could tell I was nervous and that my reactions were shit. they can smell the fear.
floe's " i suck" level is much different from a random anon's " i suck" level in my opinion
>>333674036
Press the block button the moment an attack will connect with you.
>>333675446
Not really.
His Gief was mad shitty
>>333675663
teach me some zangief, what's your cfn?
>>333664105
Parry in Bayonetta, my favorite!
>>333675812
DougYanceyFunnie
>>333674946
This is the sickest thing I've ever seen
>>333675294
Of course they reward you for mashers you dumbass.
It's a hit or miss mechanic, what don't you understand ?
In SF doing a reversal depends on nothing but a blind guess.
>losing to floe's zangief
Don't have a proper webm, but slashbacks in GGXXAC
https://youtu.be/qL6lxb69EpQ?t=167
It gets a ton of shit but I though Armor lock was super satisfying when you managed to actually save yourself from a vehicle or rocket with it.
SUPERIOR LIMB-BASED COMBAT
>>333664387
Just guard and royal release are the greatest feeling.
>>333676419
Reversal LITERALLY means doing something on the first possible frame.
Reversal does not grant you any special properties except in SF4 where certain reversal specials gain armour break.
You can do a reversal dash, you can do a reversal normal you can do anything reversal if your timing is on point, it's not a mechanic, it's a term.
Now, newer SF games have reversal WINDOWS for special moves and I think that's what you're trying to describe but all the shitposting got to your brain.
>>333676601
post cfn
>>333677271
>Reversal LITERALLY means doing something on the first possible fram
Mashing on the first possible frame*
>>333677536
Unless you can mash at 1f timing then no, you can't mash anything into reversal.

Which BR is that?

Primal Fury
>>333675375
wouldn't that be an offensive mechanic?
