It has some of the best gameplay in the series, but the story sucks. Just skip the CG cut scenes desu. You wont miss anything

Played it, beat it twice just to get the Nosferatu

Story's pretty meh, has it moments, cheesy by Ace Combat standards, and non-stop DANCE WITH THE ANGELS

I really liked AC4. On the PS2, I think?

Haven't played any of the newer ones. They look a bit too arcade-like; I always played cockpit view so the new camera stuff is unappealing to me. Not that it was a flight sim series in the first place, lol.

Ace Combat 4 is more like an arcade game than 5 and Zero that follow it, I feel.

its pretty good, its a remake of 2
you get a lot more customization compared to previous games, and there's an added mechanic where you can drift in mid-air, flying forward then turning yourself around to boost in a completely different direction

Worse story than its predecessors, great gameplay though, biggest furballs in the series except maybe Infinity, hopefully Project Aces just does the logical thing and improve on that.

Gameplay-wise it's my favorite in the series. Everyone talks about the scale of the battles, but that truly is its calling card, no other game in the franchise does it as well. Part of this comes from the way they structure the missions. Instead of a singular objective like in most AC games, each battle is split up into Operations, where you have multiple allied operations in progress throughout the battlefield. There might be an air supremacy battle going on in one area, and on the ground below you'll have tank battalions initiating a breakthrough operation. Meanwhile, miles away you have ground forces trying to capture an airport. As the player, your overall objective is just to help out wherever you can, and ensure as many of these objectives are accomplished as possible. And you're usually part of a larger flight that's supporting you in this. Everything just feels larger. There's more enemies, more missiles flying everywhere, more stuff going on, more objectives, etc.

Story-wise it's a little below par but still has that idealistic feel often present in AC stories.

>>333654351
It's good, controls are a little tight but it's a competent AC game.
>>
>>333654101
That depends on how you feel about the slower than a bike planes inherited from Joint Assault and maneuvers, you can do a bunch of spins to get behind an enemy instantly with a single button press, but your real turn radious is complete ass without using the High-G turn thing, which almost comes to the point of being unfair against previously said slow planes
I personally hated it
>>
>>333654691
also just remember to change the flight control scheme, because the default has the novice controls on

It's what I expected from a 'next-gen' installment of a franchise: both the visuals and the scale of its missions are on a whole other level to the PS2 games. Even the tried and tested 'bombers attack your airbase' mission has a lot going on and it all looks great from the terrain to how missile trails stay active for so long.

Whether or not that increased scale is a good thing varies from mission to mission though. It's impressive at first, but a bit of a headache when going for higher ranks and all the optional objectives. You juggle two to three missions at once in some cases with the only real change to how the game plays being the addition of a front facing or personal 'Fuck Off' option through Allied Support.

I much prefer AC6's aesthetic to AH's MAKE STEEL BLEED. That game only succeeded in its low aim to bring more visceral detail to kills when the camera zoomed in super close during cutscenes or DFM/ASM kills.
>>
>>333653401
the fuck is your idea of a hard game? Certain spots are harder than any STG, grand strategy, DRPG or vehicle sim I've played.

Maybe if your idea of hard is the top tier of competitive FPS and fightan but single player doesn't get much more difficult.
>>
Am I crazy if I really enjoyed 04 but it didn't blow me away? It's an extremely fun game with a great story and the dog fights are pretty well designed, but I feel like it gets bogged down with tedious ground-focused missions, and the fact that there's no way to speed up the missions because of the timers really hurt the replay value. Plus, the actual combat was really simple and didn't evolve or change much as the game progressed.
>>
>>333655957
>the fuck is your idea of a hard game
One where the AI is actually programmed to be a threat. For me AC is nothing but shooting at green boxes. I played the AC6 Ace of Aces missions while I had a 41C fever and even then they more of a nuisance than anything.

As for your question, actual sims while playing against humans, to cite one.

>>
>>333656261
No, that's the thing with AC, from AC04 onwards it became more and more focused on groundpounding. Air combat never was hard, even the unkillable yellows at the oil fields could be killable if they didn't have god mode on. Dodging missiles is a fucking joke, it always has been, and it will always be like that. If you want a faster, harder, more focused on air to air game try AC1/2/3.

As far as the Holy Trinity is concerned, I'd say Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War is probably my favorite. The gameplay and the effects felt far better than the previous game, and the story was pretty great at telling a war story in a fictional world that felt like it had some history to it.

And that's actually the reason for why I don't like Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War as much, because while the gameplay was just as competent the story was actually quite a letdown.

Meanwhile, Shattered Skies felt like a slower game with less power, so to speak, but the story is everything I want every "we've almost been defeated, bring us back from the brink of ruin" plot to be like.
>>

It was actually my first xbox game and Ace Combat, so I'm a little biased towards it, but I genuinely think that the ost and some missions are truly amazing, specially the one where you have to take the giant plane that is like a floating fortress, and the graphics are great, they still hold up.
The story is cheesy and retarded as fuck though.

This is mainly why 4 doesn't rank high with me. I'd have to replay it to be sure, but at the time I felt like it had way more air-to-ground objectives than pretty much any other game in the franchise except maybe 6.

I just feel that Unsung War did this amazing job of hyping the Belkan War as the most glorious and terrible conflict to ever happen and the Belkan war machine as an unstoppable monster that took two separate continent-sized superpowers to keep in check, at which point the entire country self-destructed in nuclear fire rather than face defeat. It gave the entire thing epic proportions, and the fallout of it is exactly what causes the events of 05, like an aftershock.

Then comes Zero, and the game has a much more... personal story, shall we say, and the war looks nowhere near as vast and interesting as the previous game made it out to be. Hell, half of the game isn't even dealing with Belka, but with pointless border-hating terrorists. It has nowhere near the vastness I'd expect a game like that to have.
>>
>>333648372
Arguably the best AC title, but much like Vesperia nobody who normally plays the series has a 360 to play them.

The ground is a flickering mess of textures, and the plane menu backgrounds vary from functional to entirely black. I also suspect some of your planes have no texture while in-game, at least in the first game.

Other than that, it's actually perfectly playable. 04 is the one that's the worst when it comes to emulation, 5 and Zero are better but they still have the flickering ground texture.

On GPU mode they run at perfect framerate with upscaling, but the ground textures flicker which can be very distracting and your plane model will be completely black in 3rd person and hangar mode

On CPU mode it runs accurately, but will run at 10fps when a lot of units are on the screen at once. Most of the time it usually runs around 50-60 FPS though

Not who you were replying to, but 0's plot was more morally grey than 5's which made the politics a lot more interesting.

Also, the way in which the story left a lot of room for role-playing thanks to the Ace Style gauge was great.
>>
>>333657392
I've always fancied taking what Infinity did with its multiplayer competitive assault missions and upscaling it by a ridiculous amount, like assaulting or liberating huge cities and cumulatively scoring everyone based on their individual performances. I feel like the time and effort it would take for a full team to completely take a city could be incredibly fun, especially because of the multirole approach people could take by splitting between Fighter and Attacker roles.

This is also mostly because I'd fucking love to see a team of 8 random strangers work together to lay siege to and liberate Gracemeria, San Salvacion, Farbanti and other locations. And then each level ends with a megaboss like Infinity's special side missions.
