I've only played dark souls II
I've not played any game in the souls series, it sounds and looks really tedious to play.
currently on my first playthrough , I keep dying like a n00b in No-mans's Wharf , because I keep rushing like an idiot
Also I use the Bastard sword, didn't like it in DaS1 , but I love it here (they changed the longsword moveset , what's the deal with that?)
DaS1 used to kinda lagg on my craptop , but DaS2 runs smooths as hell
Tips and tricks for a beginner?

monsters in DaS2 will tend to follow you MUCH longer than they will in DaS1. There also tends to be more of them in crowded spaces. Unless you know exactly where to run, rushing is the worst idea and will take ultimately take longer since you'll end up going through the same shit over and over. edge forward slowly, clear areas 1 by 1, and have an area that you can lure enemies back to in order to fight safely until you know the placements well enough to advance more fluidly
also, a torch and/or lockstone can be extremely helpful once you get to the "top" area of the wharf where the big spooky monsters are (they are afraid of light, have long reach, inflict bleed and their poise is annoying as fuck to deal with)

The spider fags won't even really attack you if you have a torch. Come to think of it, half the mobs in that game seem to cower from fire. bright stone cove is a cake walk with a torch.

You can go anywhere anytime butterfly and ceaseless are optional. Send you may get destroyed but it is next but you can just power through it or just level up or go somewhere else you haven't. Its open world until you beat the last boss, just explore and have fun. If you want to do all the content wait to fight the last boss. If you want an easier/harder order there is a map guide that tells you a good order( kind of like megaman bosses) although I don't have it.

The boss in No mans wharf in the boat
If you fight too long the boat will fill with water up to your waist and you cant roll through it, you get very slow
Lighting paper buff is recommended as water makes the boss weak to it

this. Yeah side rolling can actually get you killed sometimes. My second character was a full dex character, and I had a light roll the whole game, side rolling improved slightly, but DS1 has perfect rolling. So glad DS3 has mechanics more similar to the first game.
