Given the promises on Zero expanding on Fox and James' relationship, I hope it concludes that James was kind of an asshole.
My guess is with SF0 they could easily retcon James as being alive still.
After all, we only have Pigma's word that he's actually dead, and Pigma is a greedy liar. James probably could have paid him off to fake his death, or Pigma would do a slap-dash job, make an assumption, and fly off in a victories stupor.

I could imagine one would be reasonably competent at flying one after a year or two of training, and she didnt need to be an ace at the time. It makes even less sense if you consider the romantic angle. Why put someone you care in a situation where they could easily be killed? This is even more true if it takes years of training just to get them into a position where they might get killed.
It's all irrelevant now because the timeline is reset again but if they want to introduce new characters to the series (assuming there's EVER a new Star Fox game) I would offer the option of befriending lone wolf mercenaries. Krystal could be one of those. The other pilots from Star Fox 2 could be as well.
