I was thinking of starting a GBA collection recently. What games are essential for the system? The only games I own at the moment are Iridion 2, Sands of Time, and Wario Land 4.

Give source first. I wanted that animation collection from another thread.

This happened to me today:
>24 years old. Been out of college 2 years, still like at home but only because looking for someone to get an appt with. I have my own career, I'm athletically fit, and I'm social enough, but I fucking love Vidya.
Anyway
>Get home from work
>Mom is home
>"Hi anon, how was work"
>Talk about work
>She says she got something for me, a late birthday present (we were on vacation for my birthday)
>Go into dining room to see
>it's a very large, highly detailed poster which reads "The Evolution of Essential NES games"
>It looks pretty sweet, it has every notable NES game on it and connects them all via genre and other factors.
>"What's wrong anon? I was going to frame it for you"
>Explain to her that I don't want it.
>Say that I don't want to have video game posters hanging in my room
>"But you love video games, this honestly seemed like something you would like when I thought of you honey"
>Say I don't want to be known as someone that plays video games. I just enjoy it as a hobby on the side.
>She seems puzzled
>"I don't want the poster, Mom"
>Walk away and start walking upstairs
>Half way up, stop to listen
>Hear nothing for 5 minutes, then eventually hear her quietly roll the poster up and walk out into the garage with it
>>
Spirits and Spells/Castleween is a pretty decent platformer.

gameboy games have fucking skyrocketed in price in the last 8 years
and good luck if you want it in their box, because 90% of them are cardridge only
you're better off just emulating and hoping this 'retro' phase eventually dies out

I'm here and still have not seen it myself.

OP, I'm still working on my GBA collection, but I'd say:

>Metroid Fusion
>Metroid: Zero Mission
>Advance Wars 1
>Advance Wars 2
>Fire Emblem 7
>Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
>Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga
>Mega Man Zero series (eh, I wasn't a fan but it might be your thing)
>Mega Man Battle Network series
>Basically all of the Super Mario Advance series

There are a ton of GBA games I still need to play myself.

A flashcart is almost required if you're playing Mother 3. Emulators fuck up the timing on combos.
>>
>>333594863
I forgot about:

>Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
>Mario vs. Donkey Kong series (presumably, I only ever played the first one and it was surprisingly good)
>>
>>333588382
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Fire Emblem games
Gradius Advance
Klonoa games
Mega Man Zero series
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis
Wario Land 4
Yoshi's Island (if you don't have the SNES version)

It's been awhile since I even touched my GBA titles, outside a select few, so I might be missing something or some might not be all that good. Those were the ones which really stood out to me.

Anyone ITT every play the Shining Force remake? How was it? Supposedly the first two SF games are supposed to be underrated as fuck strategy games.
>>
>>333595934
Shining Force is a fairly good series, if overly easy.

It's intended to be Fire Emblem, but with JRPG towns and characters and allowing you to replay battles, due to the Egress spell. (The main character can cast it to retreat from battle and fight it again.) That's the main source of the easiness: you can run through a battle multiple times and overlevel everyone, especially your healers if you do it too much.

The games and characters were quite likable, although the games didn't offer much replay value as a result. Once you know what fights are coming and what happens, there isn't much point in replaying outside stupidly overpowering characters.

I felt disappointed with Shining Force GBA, although part of that might've been just playing through the Genesis version somewhat beforehand and so replaying it was just not interesting. The two new characters and stages for them felt tacked on. I'd probably recommend just the Genesis/Steam version, although there's no harm in playing through the GBA version if you have it available. The sound might not be as good, although I might be misremembering that point.
>>
>>333596505
Thanks, maybe I'll pick up the steam versions when they're on sale, and maybe the GBA version sometime.
>>
>>333596614
You might as well try emulating the first game for the first chapter or so, to see how you like it. No sense wasting money on something you don't care about.

I'm still annoyed that Steam just has the first two games only. There's four in total (SF1-3 + Shining Force CD) and it shouldn't be hard to put them on PC at this point.

I like FE well enough, I'd probably like SF as well. Though I see your point.

Didn't we only get the first part of SF3 and the last two parts were Japan-only?

>Kojima will never make another Boktai

Probably one of his better series. The guy can still be creative when he wants to. The play outside mechanic was genius, I have so many memories of this game in summer, it's hard to hold back the nostalgia tears.

Excellent game.

You can skip 1. But play the others. All of them.
>>
>>333600818
I'm not going to skip any of them, though I don't know if I should play both version of every game. Do they change only the robot masters (and consequently, the transformations you have access to), or do they change the stages too?

The differences in versions are the navi's you face (robot masters) and a few chips. The stories are mostly the same with some small mostly unimportant changes here and there to fit with the different navi's.
>>
>>333601127
so it's perfect for replayability, I guess I'll go through one half of them, then when I replay them, the second half

I played 5DS with Team Colonel, next I'll surely replay it with Protoman

LET'S GO LAN HIKARI

gba was an amazing console, but starting a physical collection of it now makes no sense.
It's one of the few consoles that is 100% emulatable even on a fucking phone, and emulators even natively support motion sensor (in games such wario ware twisted) and light sensor (in games such as boktai). Also, you can upscale it to amazing resolutions, have an awesome brightness, take screenshots, deeply explore games with custom roms and gameshark codes, and get rid of the annoyance of having to replace the batteries inside the cartdridges.

Just buy a nice Bluetooth controller (the ones with a clip to attach your phone to it), find a nice emulator, and have a blast with it.
