MMORPGs are in that weird dark age where everyone's stumbling around slathered in shit and disease and every other day another post-WoW-era MMO goes up in flames on a funeral pyre
that being said there's really only Blizzard's Skinner Box that prints money or Square Enix's Skinner Box that prints money
and the money's not going back into either of those games, so they're not getting any better.

Dragon's Dogma Online have some pretty good combat, I'd go as far as to say it's one of the best, if not the best combat in a MMORPG.
Can't say anything about the playerbase though, the game is only available in nip land.
Is mabinogi still good? It's never had a decent community, but the gameplay is pretty unique compared to other MMOs.

I love how they spent all that time and money fixing XIV 1.0 with ARR, hit the point when it became confluent and profitable, then immediately pulled all support- keeping the game on life support with a mere skeleton crew; dumping 100% of the profits into XV while simultaneously reneging all promises off improvement and squandering that hard-won player goodwill.
If they'd doubled down and kept the content-heavy updates flowing they could have printed money and killed WoW. But no, they flip everyone the bird and gamble it all on black (ie. XV).
Of course the game is still somewhat profitable which calls to mind that old adage, "the ones that mind don't matter, and the ones that matter don't mind". Fucking casuals.
Maybe Crowfall will pull it off
I mean it probably won't since they are a kickstarter working off a hamstringed marketing budget but maybe the stars will allign.

I left at around G18 and didn't see any of the mods actually fucking with the game anymore. Pake users got banned really quickly and the UI mods are all information/less intensive graphics. I've even used the bot stuff before and it's just tedium, like a program to skip a minigame.
Did 2 content updates worth of time bring some newer hacks to the game?
I do agree with cash shop bullshit, though. They really don't have any ideas anymore.
>>333585916

Kabam fucked it.
Everything is so instanced to fuck and back, and all the best loot is in the instances, that you'll rarely interact with people outside your clan.
It isn't the "85 people in the same general area, where the well geared people are fighting the Cube Boss and the regular people are fighting the Medusas" game it once was.
Also it's got tons of shekelin' pay-4-stuff stuff in it, but every single item is priced about 10x what you'd expect it to be priced, and none of it is essential. I imagine Kabam can't possibly be making much money.
You, as a player, start with 16 inventory slots.
How much money would you expect to pay, in order to have 100 inventory slots?
$0.50?
$2?
Maybe $5, if the dev was really greedy?
Oh you poor dumb bastard. $40, and that's WITH the discount for spending ridiculous amounts of money on gold.
>$40
>Not even for the entire game
>Not for the top of the line items
>Not for something that lets you skip like 90% of the grind
>Just for 100 inventory space
Yep
>Then what do you pay to skip the grind and get top of the line items
You do not pay to skip the grind entirely but $20 a week will bypass most of it.
Top of the line items are not for sale, but items that would be considered "babby's first real gear" are $30 for a full set. Note that there are 3 tiers above this.
No joke, the pricing is literally "Take what a normal facebooking pay2play addict will pay. multiply by 10."

>killed WoW
I'm sure that if SE thought they had any chance at swallowing WoW, they would have tried. Their thinking is that they need to maintain the Final Fantasy brand, and that means that they desperately need a new mainline title. XIII has been hanging over the series like a dark cloud for almost seven years. The only way they'll ever shake that is by making XV an amazing game. I understand why they're betting so much on it. The FF name is worth much more to them than any one MMO, and it will remain in a bad place unless they can really wow people.
>>333585313
That's funny, because as a low sec pirate approximately about 10 percent of people i encounter are like that. The other 90% are gate camping with me.

the period to mourn the western release was from the first month to the end of the first year of the game's release. now there's so much content that we'd literally never ever see if they released it in the west that there'd be no point. not to mention so much of the dedicated playerbase in the west has just bit the bullet and made accounts for the JP version.
>>333584751
I don't usually play MMOs,so I also would like to hear the opinion of /v/ in an MMO that will keep me playing.I started playing L2 4-5 months back in a high five server cause I had no idea what to play and kind of nostalgia i guess,so gave it a shot and left it within 2 weeks time.I was wrong, the game is dead af.Also is Black Desert worth ? >>333584751

>>333584751
Not being a wowclone and having a decent playerbase is impossible, because it's a genre filled with retards who demand both of those things. Good gameplay is similarly impossible, as said retarded fanbase demands every MMO be a shitfest entirely dedicated around an endless endgame progression of dungeons. MMOs are fun when they're about exploring and questing and doing interesting shit while you level; any MMO designed around it's endgame is always and will always be shit, and any MMO that isn't designed around it's endgame is hated because the fanbase is retarded.
>>333586314

But 4.0 will FIX EVERYTHING anon, don't you see?
As another anon said in another thread some time ago, there are people who really believe that dropping PS3 support will actually change anything and are in for a rude fucking awakening when 4.0 drops PS3 support and the game is exactly the same.
Combat will still be shallow with next to no strategy or depth. The game will still be made up of small isolated instances. Cat asses will still be flat. The role system will be no less rigid. We will not get addons and the UI will not become any more customizable.
Every update will continue to be the same as the last.
>>333589969
I used to really enjoy Lineage 2 back in the days, the PvP system was fun and the graphics were pretty for its time.
However the unrealistic demands in terms of farming led to massive goldbuying and botting, making it a pay2win game, at least on official servers. I always refused to play on unofficial ones.

>>333585393
WoW desperately needs a big dose of competition if it's ever going to stop wallowing in its own complacent mediocrity
WoD is pretty much universally seen as the worst expansion of the game's lifetime, even media outlets have called the game's current stage of life its worst without a doubt
Legion needs to do a lot to make up for WoD and while I'm sure I'll buy it and so will a lot of people, the real test will be if it can keep players for longer than the initial resub month
Since we are here, is TERA online worth getting into at this point?
Enjoyed the BETA back then, but my laptop at the time almost burnt running it
>>333590430
This is the only right answer in this thread.
>>333591063
Sure, if you don't mind grinding and then not being able to get into instances with randoms because you need to Korean rng +15 all your gear first.
>>333590339
Japanese companies aren't exactly known for taking risks. Once they find something that works you can forget about anything significant changing, ever.
>>333591063
It's a typical korean MMO. It looks nice and the combat is decent, everything is dreadfully middling or plain bad. The engine was clearly not intended for this kind of game and it doesn't work very well.
The UI uses flash for fuck sake.
>>333584751
Mabinogi.
Unless by 'decent playerbase' you meant quality, not quantity.
>>333590427
It was a pretty decent game for its age,I remember playing countless Hours when I was younger
>>333590339
should i play ffxiv or ffxi? i got xiv in a humble bundle recently and i was thinking about using the free trial to start my character then transfer to the free month the full game comes with and just play a lot of hours within those two months. should i spend this time playing xiv or play xi instead?
>>333591476
If you've never played XIV there's a lot to do - people complaining about the game are those who have reached endgame and found it lacking.
Just treat it as a JRPG first and MMO second, and be very patient with it, and you may like it.
XI on the other hand I feel is a "you had to be there" kind of game. It really isn't fun in 2016, the conditions that made it fun are gone.
>>333586591
Dark Arisen sold above Capcoms expectations in the west on PC, so there is faith yet.
Who am I kidding, western release never.
>>333591590
yeah i figured as much for ffxi, what made it fun though? are there any private servers or mods that enhance it? but i didnt know xiv had any jrpg aspects at all, i assumed these two were pure mmos
I know it's wow-like but is Rift any good?
>>333584751
tree of savior
>>333591929
Friend and I played it for a short while.
Cut corners everywhere. Vague quest details will have you running in circles. The fancy class system is just pick two to min-max and maybe a bit from a third. To top it all off it became extremely pay to win.
Don't waste your time.
>>333591787
>What made it fun?
Other people, basically. The gameplay is very barebones and grindy and you couldn't do much by yourself.
Now, you have NPCs who play with you to more or less automate combat and all the actual players are at endgame.
>but i didnt know xiv had any jrpg aspects at al
Strong focus on story and dialogue. Expect long cutscenes and sequences where nothing happens but people talking to each other for a while. In fact, the intro to the game is a long cutscene and the first few quests involve running around talking to NPCs.
>>333591929
It's a cut-rate MMORPG and it shows. It was decent when it was released, but RIFT today isn't the game it was before.
DFO if you're really into grind, PSO2 if you have the time for EQs.
>>333591590
Not that anon but I heard that FFXI still has a /v/-guild going on but that might not be enough to keep me there. Now that Nos is dead, maybe I'll go back to FFXIV and actually get to raiding.
>$20 to upgrade to expac
>$18 to character transfer to Gilgamesh.
Is it worth it /v/?
>>333592796
>$20 to upgrade to expac
You don't have to pick up HW until you're at it in the story. After youbeat Ultima weaponthere's like 4-7 days of quests you need to do to get to HW.
Transfer might be worth it depending on what server you're on, I dunno.
Either way I'm going to bed.
