Fans have been begging for this for quite some time now. Square knows that this is their Ace in the Hole.
The vagueness surrounding the "episodic content" is worrying for people who wanted a 1:1 transition. The ARPG system alone might alienate people who played and loved the original system and begged for the 1:1 transition in light of recent FF trends.

Yeah, in one single fucking product, for a single fucking price, at the late 1990s stage of disc technology. It was three discs because all of the content couldn't be contained on a single disc, but even then they still managed to release a full product that you could continue at will, not wait for a year while they fuck about trying to meet deadline on the second episode.
Unless each of those episodes is $20 each and contains more content than each of those discs per episode to justify separate purchases, it's a bad investment of time and money until the final product is ready.
