Legends 2 is a masterpiece due to better controls, Legends 1 I believe lacked analog support and the controls are miserable. I'm nostalgic for it, but If you're going to play them today Legends 2 is the one that holds up. It also looks a hell of a lot better.

No dumbass, there are clearly no causal loops in time travel in AVGN canon, or all of his past selves except the original would have experienced the visit from the future James before and would have known what was going on, and future James himself would know he was going to travel through time at some point.

People primarily interested in Nintendo games were not used to tank controls. Really, the only Nintendo game I can think of with tank controls besides the shitty port of Ikari Warriors is Shadows of the Empire. From that perspective, it probably seemed like a foreign concept.
For some reason I really didn't like the green screen use in this episode. Even the Nightmare on Elm Street episode looked better with multiple nerds. It looks really stupid when no one has a shadow. Why didn't James opt to splice several takes together? (dunno the term, the effect used for multiple Micheal J. fox characters in BttFII) There weren't even many instances of the nerds making contact with or passing by each other.
