Tried it for two years, the only review copy I got was Metro 2028. Granted, most of the games I opted to review for were Nintendo games, and getting review copies from them is incredibly difficult, almost unheard of. Even if you make videos, you need the devil's own luck to strike gold. You could have all the talent in the world and work like a dog, and still not make it.

Reviewers are useful yes, the problem lies in the fact that some people take the opinion of some random guy as the absolute truth just because he calls himself a reviewer/analyst. The fact that people tend to think that a opinion of some guy bears more significance and objectivity than everybody else's just because giving his opinion is supposed to be his profession is what makes some people have grudges against reviewers.

You probably already know this, but try to start something without much pretension. Try to just do what you want without caring that much about what will happen afterwards. Most projects tend to fail because people start with way too high expectations about it.

That too but honestly, I think that even without being paid off reviewers are naturally biased against and in favor of some types of games because of a bunch of outside reasons, not to mention that most of them are casuals that don't really like video games that much and are only doing what they do because they are failed journalists.
On another note, I think reviews can be used to give you a different perspective and/or to help you make a decision, in the case of vidya the later is much more frequent and the first is almost exclusive to video reviews, which is a pity because it only goes to show how the medium is still not viewed as something with artistic value by most people. You talked about making a site that writes detailed reviews and honestly, I'd love to have something like that considering that no one else does it these days. Think that at least you'll have the edge of exploring something without much competition, while trying to make a living of youtube is something that millions of people do.
