Christ, now I remember how hyped I was for WoW, and how much fun I had. My mind was literally blown the first time I got from silverpine forest, with all it's dark and moody ambiance, hopped on a Zepplin for the hell of it, and arrived in Durotar and from there to Stranglethorn Vale just as the sun was setting.
For the time at least, it was so beautiful and immense.

They had zero foresight past wrath. They knew they couldn't keep it together past the absolute epitome of their franchise. The initial world was absolutely stunning for the first time. Then outland was amazing. And finally northrend. Then they had to go and shove bullshit meme Warcraft shit down or throats like pandas. And then they had to fucking wing it with cataclysm because that story was as dry as 3 day old toast. Maybe it didn't happen in that order. But still they cashed in on the intial Warcraft 3 hype and when they couldn't keep up with it they revealed who they truly are, talentless hacks who cashed in on the wonderment and excitement of children and young adults who could understand and appreciate their stories. People who had fucking years of predefined material to work with but absolutely fell apart when it came time to continue to create interesting and challenging content. I hope they rot in hell for what they did to a franchise that was always so much more than a game to so many people. They should have let it die. Rather than propping the corpse up on a cross section of its old house and acting like the smell of death isn't filling the room.

I still have a vague (though deniably soul crushing) hope that if you beat the game under certain conditions (like a self-imposed European extreme mode with no kills), there might be more content, or if not that, then at least something foreign and unexpected. There's so much weird shit going on in that game and so many allusions to boundary pushing works I wouldn't be surprised there's something left that people simply haven't found. I see. Well Generations is largely praised. And it's essentially Sonic Unleashed, if they surgically removed the werehog, and replaced it with Classic Sonic.
The werehog is just a super casual god of war. And some people might argue that god of war is casual itself.
Basically, you just spam the same combos at the same enemies, do some laughable platforming, and then fight some more.
But the Sonic levels are very fun. The sense of speed is great. And there's fun to replay just to try to best your record. In unleashed, the scoring in levels still mattered. So you have to be really good to get S ranks. Unlike Generations, where they're handing out S ranks like they're tootsie rolls on Halloween.

Cataclysm should be regarded as the beginning of the end.....they started it off strong and then went spiraling downhill so fucking fast. It's sad too because it did have some good content (Vashjir, Uldum, Firelands) but it was just too much. Mop was a step back in the right direction but the damage was already done with raid finder and then I don't even want to pretend to know what wow is now.

It didn't start off bad, the Naxx rehash was kinda lazy, but completely understandable given the setting. Everyone was excited to see it have a place in Northrend. That must have given them extra time to build Ulduar too, which was truly the last time the game could be considered great.
I think that was also just before they announced the merge with Activision, that was objectively when the game went downhill. The subs stopped growing and soon after they started dropping, although it was delayed in effect because the Asians were significantly behind in BC or early Wrath.
