Lads I'm gonna buy myself this thing for desktop replacement for travel and university. Should be good right? It's MSI GT72S dominator pro dragon edition

>Inb4 32gb of ram

I don't want it either but no one let's me customise it in Canada and ordering from US is too expensive

>Inb4 gaming laptop
>>
>>333529403
What are its actual specs?
Anyway, MDI, Asus and Lenovo make the best price: performance ratio laptops.

I got a 2009 model Asus G60vx in 2010 from EBay, and it has served me well. Still can run modt titles at 720p/30fps
>>
>>333529403
>32GB of ram

Fucking why
>>
>>333530565
I don't fucking know, I don't even half of them but Canada is a shit hole and no website let me customise it

>>333530387
It's got a desktop gtx 980 and an i7 2.7ghz unlocked with ips panel with g sync
>>
>>333531587
how much does it cost?
>>
>>333531703
Just the small amount of 4400 CAD including tax

That's expensive as fuck

>>333530387
Lenovo is shit and won't last you very long
>>
>>333532354
I don't actually live in Canada I'm from the UK and when I saw it online for 3.8k I actually thought it was cheaper than the UK price of 2.6k GBP

Honestly I don't want to spend the money but I'll be away from my pc for a very very long time and I have a lot of triple As in my backlog
>>
Shouldn't spend more than 2,500 usd on something like that, it won't be worth it
>>
>>333532895
>b-but muh gtx 980 performance on the go

Anything you can recommend? I think aorus's stuff look like shit and I'm not a big fan of asus since I bought my mom her laptop and tablet for her and another one for my brother from asus and they were pretty bad
>>
>>333529403
I will warn that, having done the same thing and bought a laptop for gaming, they don't last very long.
My battery's almost totally dead, and I got this thing 2ish years ago. Granted, it's a Gigabyte, but proceed with caution anyways.
>>
>>333529403
Laptops age like milk. Don't fall for that shit.
>>
>>333533106
>>333533287
I can still take the parts out of it after I'm done with it right lads?

Like if I build a PC in a two years from now, I can take out of the RAM and SSD/HDD atleast right?
>>
>>333532895
OP I hace an MSI from 3 years ago, it.works like a charm
The only problem I ever had with it which was just a nuance was upgrading the rams

I dont use my laptop for gaming, but mostly very high resolution works in both photoshop and maya 3D and I needed it mobile

As such I also needed a lot of ram
MSI was retarded on my laptop and they put the heatsink ON TOP of the ram slots, so I needed to unseat the heatsink put the rams in the.slots and then put the heatstink back along with new thermal paste

...Anyway if you're going for an MSI laptop maybe having 32GB and not having to upgrade it later might sound good if you dont want to go through that
>>
>>333532195
I bought my msi for 2.8k so that doesn't surprise. Had it for a year and I'm digging it's durability. Past laptops have all been junk at least msi uses not shit parts. Dell and hp are literal garbage.
>>
>>333532195
lmao
>>
>>333533498
The rams likely wont work
The HDDs/SSDs will
>>
>>333533519
cheers senpai, the main reason the price went up like that is because its got a desktop GTX980 in it which I don't even know if its worth it or not
>>
>>333533498
Theoretically, yes. I'm just saying you'll have to replace enough mobile parts (mobile graphics cards and the like, but also fans and batteries) that it might just be better to build a desktop. Mobile parts are expensive as hell.
>>
>>333533498
Yes.
>>
>>333533712
Yeah I don't plan on buying Dell or HP

I have looked at Acer and asus as well but I feel like Aorus and Acer's stuff aren't as high quality as MSI and asus but I have bad encounters with asus before >>333533010

Brought the xps 15 from Dell. Only going to play light games on it like CS GO.
>>
>>333533729
What are you going to play on it?
>>
My MSI from 2010 cost me 1.6k USD. You can find cheaper and not even buy low end. Cmon anon.
>>
>>333534573
The new total war, overwatch/heroes, Witcher 3, MGS 5, Modded skyrim and Falout some hentai VN/rpgmaker games battlefield 4

>>333534634
I want to buy a laptop for CAD 3K ish but I'm worried about its performance facing triple As
>>
>>333534880
I know shit all about engineering and architecture programs. Good luck.
>>
>>333534880
Am pretty sure the GTX980 is worth it.

How good are MSI's products anyway?
>>
anyone can recommend me a good gaming laptop for around 2.5k USD?
>>
>>333536729
No, not just anyone. You'd probably want someone with knowledge of pc parts to recommend a laptop to you.
>>
>>333537124
d-do I have to go on a proper forum like toms hardware or some shit?
>>
>>333537182
Nah, your local PC shop will do. When they charge you extra for parts, just remember that they pay taxes too.
>>
>>333532801
good luck with gaming on the fly with a laptop on demanding games

it doesn't work because it overheats
>>
>>333538892
You're going to be plugged in anyway.

My gaming laptop from 2010 ran BF3 at low-med settings for about 50fps. First gen mobile i7's are shit and mobile GPU's aren't spectacular neither. A mobile 5870 was the equivalent to a desktop 5730 or something like that. CoD4 was maxed out at 124fps and only suffered bad when multiple airstrikes and explosives just kept coming.
>>
>>333533498
nope SODIMM memory is only for laptops, just look at the small size they wont fit on a normal atx motherboard
>>
>>333531587
>desktop 980

I don't think so senpai. Heat and power draw don't make sense for a laptop. Probably a 980m in there, which isn't even close to a desktop 980.
>>
>>333539319
its probably just me then, I had bad luck with my new alienware laptop and had to install extra fans under it for CPU not to overheat
>>
>>333532195
WHAT LE FUG
>>
>>333529403
Just get the standard GT72 Dominator.

Youll save an assload of money and itll play any game on the market right now perfectly fine (Also, msi's a made so they can be upgraded later on, including the vidya card and ram)
>>
>>333539634
a 980m is a 970
>not even close
pffff

on other notes nvidia already revleaed a laptop with a hihg end desktop GPU in it but it will probably run like ass since overheating
>>
>>333539634
No there's desktop 980s in laptops now. Do a little research you fucking idiot.

>The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 for notebooks (not the GTX 980M, sometimes also referred to as GeForce GTX 990M) is an overclockable high-end graphics card for laptops. It is an desktop Geforce GTX 980 chip with the same specifications (2048 shaders, 1126 MHz base clock, 7 Gbps memory) based on selected GM204 chips (for lower power consumption).

>The performance is also on a level with the desktop GTX 980. Due to the different cooling solutions, the long term performance may be slightly lower compared to a well cooled desktop, but Nvidia assures only small degrades in performance. Furthermore, the mobile GTX 980 supports overclocking out of the box and all laptop manufacturers plan to provide an easy to use tool to overclock the card on the fly.

Why are you posting this here? Do you want validation for your stupid purchase?

Canadian myself and I would never drop almost 5k on a fucking laptop.
>>
>>333539675
I won't lie that it didn't get hot. It did. Temps were easily above 85 degrees Celsius especially when playing brand new games like BF3. Shit, TF2 gave me terrible performance but CS:S wasn't entirely bad. The fault lies with the CPU clocked at 1.7Ghz.

Literally all you need for mobile gaming atm OP. Can even play DaS3 on high setting with lowest dip in fps at 45fps
>>
>>333539993
>>333539850

Wasn't familiar with that. Still not what's in that MSi model in the OP.

OP is probably better off getting the Blade stealth and using it's Graphics card hub. Alienware makes something similar. The stealth seems like a nice ultrabook that can play all your vidya when you go back to your dorm/apt /etc.

This monster has a real desktop GPU(980). Ridiculous machine.
>>
>>333540258
thats not a problem mine gets also around that and its normal for laptop CPU's but what isn't normal is when the CPU has to throttle because it reached the limit

I was monitoring and it reached around 100 degrees and the manufactur said (intel) 100 degrees is maximum

I was just playing hereos of the storm. After installing the fans (I have 3 now under the laptop) CPU never exceeds 80 and when it does laptop fans spin up (tested with prime). It can't reach 100 anymore.

they confessed that the bios and laptop fan settings are faulty by design, they spin up too late and are not powerful enough to bring it down again or hold at reasonable degrees

>>333529403
It's too heavy for any kind of daily traversal. I have asus g751jl and it's pretty awesome for a laptop but it stays in my home. It's a good purchase if you can afford it but don't expect to haul it around every day, it just doesn't happen because it weights a ton.
>>
>>333541021
I have a 18" msi laptop that I take everywhere. Its not that burdensome if you have a good carry case. And I have an injured back
