XIII, XIII-2, and LR were all done by the same people, so obviously they have to be similar in quality and approach. XIV is a MMO, so it's a category of its own. XV may end up to be absolutely amazing or not, but it doesn't really have to do anything with the previous two.

I actually wasn't really following the game at all, but the Platinum Demo had me considering getting near if not on release. I don't personally understand the criticism of the combat, but I definitely feel the worry regarding the performance.
Then again I almost liked White Knight Chronicles' combat, and have been looking for something similar but better, and kind of see this as that so take my opinion with a lot of salt.

To be honest, KH III is made by a team exclusively centered on KH (the Osaka team. They've made all KHs except for the two first, I think?).
FF VII's grunt work is made by CC2 (a big ass company) and some other developers as well, while the creative tasks are up to S-E's people (Nomura directing, Nojima writing, Kitase producing...)
Considering all this, provided S-E wants to stop being an embarrasement, they probably started working on XVI prototypes years ago (have in mind that XV only became XV in 2012, so I'm sure some work (even if small) has been done).
I'd really want Ito helming XVI (he's directed some of my favourite games ever and is the creator of the ATB), with new blood writing, designing characters...

No, you should never do that. The only thing you can use as a reference point as to whether or not the game is worth paying for is via demo/gameplay footage from someone that isn't a developer late in the development cycle and making your own conclusions from that.

For what it's worth, XV seems to try to earn its drama. Judging from the demos, most of character development is subtle and lowkey, especially for a Japanese game. It also pays a lot of attention to interpersonal dynamics.
