I don't really think it becomes grating. It has multiple battle themes and regular encounters are over so fast that it rarely loops a lot.
I don't think I can think of a better normal battle theme than XIIIs.

I strongly disagree, of the PS1 games, FF8 most resembles the SNES soundtracks like Chrono Trigger, using a similar instrumentation, very bass heavy melodies, and every CT/FF4-6 inspired melodies.
8 also has one of the best random battle themes in the series.

To be fair, the original Dark Souls was around 50/50
Half the songs sounded like something bouncing right off of Demon's, and the rest was more of a generic orchestra.
Bloodborne has some really good songs, it actually fit the 1600-1800s horror theme perfectly, by using a soundtrack that heavily resembles the OSTs of many of the famous 1920s-1940s movie recreations of classics, as well as many classical pieces based on the same subject matter.
Also Bloodborne has some of the best ambience and environmental sounds in video games.

I can understand the notion that 12 onward and maybe 5 are a bit bland, they still aren't bad OSTs though. Each of those games have just as many signature songs as the typical soundtrack.
But the rest of the series is pretty legendary as far as a complete OST go.
All three of the PS1 games fit a different theme and thus became pretty much anything but bland to the franchise.
The NES FF games had surprisingly well developed OSTs for their time.
And then there are FF4 and FF6, which are also pretty much held in their own standard.
