It's casual as shit in everything except the inane grind for crafting resources. The combat system is beyond repair and is a shadow of the first games. The first game is one of the best diablo style games ever. It also shits on a LOT of the first games lore and the main storylines were hijacked by mary sues thanks to a shitty writer. I have a lot of friends who love it but they all have never played the first game or any other MMO.

I put 400 hours in and another 40 for the expansion. It's pretty and if you play an Ele the combat is passable. I don't play it at the moment because no new non raid content and it makes me angry at what they did to the first games lore and setting. So much wasted potential.

But in practice every single MMO makes grinding a totally mindless task that you have do to for tens or hundreds of hours simply so you get to the good content. Point to a single MMO where grinding is actually skill based or hard, you physically cant because it doesnt exist, because no developer has the balls to put in challenging content in an MMO anymore.
BDO does it the worse, it has a good combat system that it throws away on endless trash mobs that are NEVER a threat in any form. A 6 year old could play BDO well.

I hear good things about PSO2 if you're willing to jump through the hoops of setting up a VPN and half the game be in Japanese.
I've been playing and enjoying FFXIV. I never played an MMO prior to it, so I'm coming to this with pretty fresh eyes, so maybe there are a lot of flaws that I could pick apart if I knew what the fuck to look for, but regardless I'm having a good time. The environments and music in this game are some of the comfiest I've ever seen.

Everquest was challenging. You needed a group for most things, especially when going into dungeons.

Not him and I know what you mean, and I really loved Ragnarok, every build has a combo with another classes or a map where it could lvl up.
But ALSO, RO is a grindfest, not as boring, but being mid lvl and having to kill hundreds of mobs for a 0,1% lvl wasn't exactly the most fun I had in a game.
Still, I loved everything about the game, the maps, the monsters, the classes, the music. Half the time I spent in the game was just talking with guildmates around the cities.

GW2 didn't have a "prime." It came out, people played the story mode and explored the world and found out that the story was awful and the content was shallow. They found that endgame involved grinding tedious dungeons with press 1 repeatedly to win combat for gear that wasn't any better than what you were already wearing.
Updates added short questlines and occasionally another pointless zerg where you feel completely alone in a crowd. The expansion added all of one new area.
It looked nice and Soule's music was good, those are literally the only two kind things I can say about it. It was a terrible game.

Dead. Not in a sense bad, but simply that most people moved on. If you want a chance to play with someone else you need to play in NA district which because the unofficial "server" to play on for everyone still left. Playing solo was never a problem with GW1 because you could always hire henchman and eventually heroes.

I would love to recommend Secret World, but it's sadly not for everyone. Especially not for most MMORPG players. If you don't care about story, lore and puzzles Secret World will be a bad choice.
Playing on WoW private servers is going to die out. Blizzard is on a fucking warpath. The only servers that are safe are in places like Russia/China. WHERE ALL THE HACKERS ARE.
