FF7R started in 2014 and he was assigned to direct it, prior to that both Nomura and Tabata were directing FFXV together, but in 2014 when the higher ups gave the go ahead on 7R, Kitase assignment Nomura as director and that's why Nomura left XV in 2014, because he was assigned to 7R, and since Tabata had also already been directing XV for 2 years at that point he just became the sole director on that and would see it to release, FFXV release was planned way back then so they've had this stuff planned since 2013

Kojima's weird to me, because I think that despite his overwhelming predilection towards an enormous amounts of cutscenes and non-interactive ways to carry a story, I think he has a pretty good grip on gameplay and knows how to design games with a lot of depth. That said, I don't like MGS all that much.

He did get shafted. People might say it was never a big deal, but if you look at any advertising or promotional stuff for this game, once Nomura was removed from the project, he was just straight up gone. He only gave one line about it being a company decision, and then never spoke of it again. He's essentially not really even been mentioned by SE at all, when even Sakaguchi and Uematsu both spoke at the Uncovered event, despite having no direct involvement with the game whatsoever.
SE, and Yoshinori Kitase specifically, just both still have faith in him because of his other successes, and influence over other projects in the company.
