What was Cloud doing from the time he fought Sephiroth to the time he joined Avalanche?

Go to the basement of the Shinra mansion.
In the lab there you'll find two human-sizes science-tube-things, coded with "Z" and "C".
Zack and Cloud were kept there by Hojo for several years after being wounded by Sephiroth. Both were given the Jenova treatment, also Cloud was apparently mako infused. Zack eventually regained his strength and broke out, dragging mako poisoned Cloud along.
