Lightning is bad but her badness had nothing to do with the game crashing the franchise. That was because Square dumped a fuckton of money into an awful game and expected it to outperform FFX by several orders of magnitude because of the industry's growth, ignoring that that growth was mostly due to console shooters.
They were confident it was gonna do as well as Halo 3 but failed to understand that people who buy Halo aren't really interested in Final Fantasy.
But really you can't single them out, because pretty much the entire last generation can be summed up as "unrealistic expectations".

Believe me when I tell you, I'm not a fan of Lightning at all. She isn't, however, anything remotely close to the reason why XIII was terrible.
That really comes down to the direction of the game. Bad pacing, terrible world building, way, way too linear (FFX is how you do linear properly), characters fall flat and the team has little chemistry because of the horrible pacing, and on. Pretty much the only thing XIII got right was the soundtrack, which is underrated (especially XIII-2's soundtrack).
Lightning's just a poster girl that's stuck representing a supremely disappointing series of games. In the hands of better directors and teams she might've been one hell of an action girl. The main starting point would be to give her a personality that doesn't scream "I'm stuck in full-blown PMS stormtrooper mode all day, 24/7, three sixty fucking five and I beyond having a pretty face and well shaved armpits, I have zero appealing feminine qualities. There's what prior Final Fantasy's did, and then there's FFX and XIII which just funnel you down a single linear path with no option to even attempt any other route, no player agency whatsoever.
For example, in FFIV 99% of the time there's only one place you can actually go. Right near the beginning you're dropped into a desert with exactly two exits: one cave and one town. You can't actually go more than ten feet into the cave. Literally the only place to go is the town. But still, the game doesn't treat you like a drooling retard and knows that you will eventually go to the town and go to the building that triggers the next cutscene because there is nothing else to do.
FFXIII doesn't even give you the option. It puts you in a hallway with only one path forward and one way to get there. There is no path to find, there is nothing to discover, there is no thought required whatsoever. You just go forward. The game doesn't even trust you to fight enough battles on your own and makes all fights predetermined.
I'll give it to FFX that it's not nearly as egregious as FFXIII-- it still has random battles for one thing, and it does give you the opportunity to find the way forward yourself, it's just that way forward is always highlighted for you.

Honestly I liked Lightning. That game story is good but clearly they chopped alot out due to budget time restraints.
