Wii sold well because its gimmick caught on with a lot of people, it's not a hard concept to grasp. There's a reason Wii sports is the best selling game of all time next to Tetris. A simple yet intuitive design. It's not because of some Christmas console bullshit. Most people just thought it was a pretty neat concept to use motion control. Combine that with things they like, such as golf, tennis, etc. and you've struck gold.
Looking back Wii was genius, but not something that Nintendo could repeat. It was flash-in-pan success like Nintendo DS. Again, another example of a simple yet intuitive design. Touch based controls combined with simple games. Most people thought it was pretty neat.

The only thing PS1 really innovated was black colored discs... The only thing they had in common besides similar capabilities, was the ability to play music CDs. Saturn had the Netlink that would allow you to connect online for online play and halfway decent (at the time) web browsing.
Dreamcast took it even further with the modem built in... they were always ahead of the curve and somehow left the game first. So sad.
The only revolutionary feature PS1 had the ability to swap the games disc with any audio CD you had and it would become the games soundtrack. Playing Ridge Racer and listening to "Control" off the Mortal Kombat movie soundtrack was a blast actually.

If you had a launch Wii that's why, the lasers do indeed crap out after a while. It's especially common with Brawl since it's a dual layer DVD. My launch Wii read it fine at launch and shortly after but would give me more frequent read errors as time went on and eventually wouldn't even recognize it. It's not that bad really. I think Xenoblade Chronicles is definitely it's swan-song. RE4 is a great port, the wiimote makes it somewhat like an arcade cabinet or you could just use a GCN controller. MHTri kicks ass and the Wii has plenty of content still in that game without online. It looks good too. Metroid Trilogy, whatever your opinions are on the Prime series' it's credentials speak for itself. So, I guess it has some games worth buying this cheap system for. It is good in that it is cheap. Plus, it's a GCN as well w/ some video streaming services and a web browser. For the price this is a good system. Gimmicks and all. (At least the good games give you controller options)

It really didn't. Not even the 360 did that much there. Even back when San Andreas launched it was criticized for the simplistic graphics, though I do remember the reviewers acknowledging that it's necessary because of the poor hardware.
Meanwhile, the PC market was already rising in popularity rapidly and the new GPUs were all the craze. You used to see the word "realism" much, much more before the 7th generation than during and after it.

Wii had its share of good games. But I think most people view it as a console that has a bunch of bad ones due to the stigma it has and the way Nintendo advertised it.
I enjoyed stuff like Arc Rise Fantasia, Castle of Shikigami 3, Pandora's Tower, etc. on it. There were in fact some hardcore games on it that had a lasting appeal for me. But for most, it just looks like a casual device due to the fact it was advertised as one and its success being owed to casuals.
I think mobile games replaced the DS more so than the Wii. The Wii operates in a bit of a different space to mobile games in my opinion whereas DS games like brain training were a direct predecessor to smartphone games.
I think, even with smartphones, there's still a place for a system like the Wii but nintendo have fucked everything up with the Wii U. I mean really, Wii Sports, Party and Fit don't have a lot in common with mobile games. Theyre not the kind of experiences you can get on smartphones
A cheap android type multimedia box with Netflix and some party games will probably be the next wii. There's definitely still room for a casual gaming system in my opinion but it looks like nintendo won't be the ones to make it.

dios mios is kinda obsolete. Nintendon't let's you play games via hdd/sd/usb/disc and doesn't require you to install any custom IOS or anything.
It's also kinda smart to not even download dios mios at this point since it removes your ability to play gamecube games off disc. I personally use both dios mios and nintendon't though since i don't even play gamecube games via disc on my wii.
