Consoles use APU's so this memory is for both system and graphics. Don't think of it as just graphics memory. Remember on PC the game will also use GB's of RAM alongside whatever VRAM your GPU has.
We're getting to the point where some PC games want 8GB of RAM to even start, and they crave GPU's that have at least 3GB of VRAM in. If Nintendo want to release a console that's going to remain relevent against PS4/XB1 then it doesn't seem like overboard to me, it's an increment up from the other consoles.

One of the reasons why I liked the Wii so much was because of the games on it, in particular the wealth of interesting third party games to complement Nintendo's offerings, WiiU doesn't really have that.
What I want is for Nintendo to offer a system that third party developers would want to make games for, a system that provides something that the other consoles don't. They did that with the wii by offering a new control system that captured the imaginations of millions, but the thing is that once people got their hands on the thing they realized they'd rather just use a traditional controller, so much to the point where anything that deviates from it, even if it's an improvement, is met with derision.
So from my perspective the only way I could see that happening is if Nintendo produces a powerful system that could produce the best version of whatever third party games they want to produce, even though I personally would be fine playing with n64 level graphics for all eternity as long as the games are good.
If the NX actually is a home console i just hope it has a good start up screen, its depressing that they seem to be dying out
