How do you improve on the fighting game formula? I don't

How do you improve on the fighting game formula? I don't think that the answer lies in 3D nor is the solution the use of environment as anything other than a backdrop.

So how do you improve 2D or pseudo 3D fighters? What new mechanics are there? They've already tried with parries, blocking is necessary. Some TECHNOLOGY would be nice, like bruises and ripped clothing but that's just makeup, not mechanics.

A fighting game with an endless scrolling 2D stage would be neat. Would probably focus of air combat, maybe make dashing executed and measured by mashing only to make chases more intense

And what would the perspective be like? Smaller character models? I'd think that aerial combat games such as Ace Combat already cover most of this unless you want to go melee and even then you have Armored Core.

Endless stages only work when there is no time limit. Otherwise all you have to do is hit someone once and run for 99 seconds.

We're talking 2D fighting game so I'm thinking Street Fighter/Marvel v Capcom scale. I don't think there has ever been an endless scrolling stage in a traditional fighting game before.

There was in the crappy power rangers game for genesis. You could win every fight by getting the first hit in and jumping backwards until the clock ran out.
