I guess it mostly depends on your perspective. If you are the kind of person that normally feels the same way as Max does, or just either relate or completely understand all his emotions and how he acts, then each and every scene and everything he says is fantastic.

This was how Remedy wanted the Max Payne series to end:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPuJzq3oIU8
>It's true what they say about the fall and the sudden stop at the end.

>I'd lain here in the snow while the lurid chain of scenes that had led me here kept playing in my head, a rerun of my own private snuff movie, a memory of my corpse. Alone at my own wake. Thinking in metaphors again.

>The femme fatale was gone. Only a sour taste remained of the kiss that killed me.

>This was a late goodbye. Thirteen years after I'd gotten my revenge, it had finally caught up with me. It'd been a long time to bear the pain.

>My blood painted the snow red -- a gruesome slushie -- dissolved all the scattered painkillers, and leisurely dripped down to the sewer, mingling with the bile of the city, becoming one with it.

>I can see them now, my wife and my baby. Honey, I'm home.

The problem is that the game was built with cover shooting to the point that the game has you start gameplay in cover several times
You can run and gun 1/2 style but the game was not built with you doing it, I remember one bit in the nightclub chapter where I was running though the level, using slow mo to get headshots without stopping and got to the bathroom where the crowd ran in and then disappeared before my eyes

that was just hilariously good, to me
I don't know, I think it really worked. It wasn't self serious; every time shit started getting heavy something ridiculous would pop back up. Sometimes Max would even acknowledge the absurdity himself.

The way it blended grimdark with gallows humour and self awareness without ever becoming self parodic really worked for me
>>
>>333363668
>>333363731
Man on Fire is the obvious comparison that gets made because of the editing.

City of God and Tropa de Elite (I haven't seen 2) are both close to it in setting and in tone, as well as the cynical take on class (although TdE seems to lean a bit more towards fascism and MP doesn't really even try to comment on either law enforcement or the gangs; MP seems more concerned with just creating a weird fucking gordian knot of a plot)

The plot just seems straight 50's noir, piling misdirections ontop of double crosses with a cast whose only innocents are people too stupid/vapid to understand what's happening around them.

>almost all music up until then has been harsh and driving, the only exceptions being the music that plays during some flashback sequences, where the music reflects max's state - getting down to the wire, but holding it somewhat together, culminating in the panama stage music which perfectly conveys the same feeling that max expresses when he wakes up from a drunk stupor and realizes he's fucked up big time and now has to go through a level that's already been beaten except this time, it was cleared by the bad guys
>then you get to the hangar and this fades in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-sRmhZFBzQ

>mfw that's exactly what I love about it.

Don't get me wrong, I love Remedy and Sam Lake's writing, but holy fuck I'm so glad Rockstar did their own thing instead of trying ot just copy its style.

New setting and a new Max was absolutely the right move. Rockstar knew they weren't Remedy so they didn't even try, the part were Max shaves his head because GOTTA GET A GRIP is fucking amazing.

MP1>MP3>MP2.

I like to think of MP3 as an alternative timeline that takes place after 1, and MP2 as another outcome. It almost works.

Nobody has any emotional connection with Brazil. Nobody cares. It was an interesting setting when a few games like cawadoody jumped on it early on, but after that, it grew real stale real fast, and by the time MP3 got on it, nobody really cared for the setting.

Noir York is a classic setting that never gets old. It feels instantly familiar and at the same time it feels natural once you start sinking into the dark side of the city. Things never feel dark or foreboding in MP3. It just feels like you're cutting a swath through a swarm of monkeys in a junkyard. I could never take it seriously which made it feel worse because the game was trying real hard to make things look dark in this colorful shithole.

And then there's this dumb bullshit like pic related, you might as well just start a new series if you're going to disregard pretty much everything in the past two games.

>Man on Fire is the obvious comparison that gets made because of the editing.

It's compared to Man on Fire because its the same damn plot. Max is the same as Creasy; a burnt out alcoholic military/ex-cop who is hired to be a body guard for a wealthy family. The kidnapping happens and everything goes to shit. Pinta, like Fabiana and Marcelo, are brutally murdered (Pinta is also raped but they left that out) and Max/Creasy swears revenge and goes on a campaign to murder, kill, and destroy everyone and everything responsible for the kidnapping and systemically destroys the whole thing from the ground up. In both Man on Fire and MP3 the family is as corrupt as the day is long and Max/Creasy learns of it and goes all the way to the top of the scheme and takes it apart. They both ride off into the sunset at end.

Except this was pretty much the best part of MP3 and definitely the most atmospheric. They could easily make a new IP and set it in Brazil and it would be fine.
It still made no sense in the context of the last two games since by the end of MP2 he was healing and was getting over the shit in his life, and he had his vengeance. MP3 just wanted to cash in on the story by turning him back around and making him an uncontrollably angry alcoholic who pussies out of the country after he pisses off a few jersey homos to fight all of Brazil all at once

You people are the same people that cause more suicides than actually make people step away from them.

Telling someone, who wants control of their life, what to do is literally the worst thing you can do. You phrase it like,

>"If you want to, I can't stop you. But I really wish you wouldn't."

The way you phrase it matters more than ever.

spoilers: when we're talking about the editing we're talking about the movie released in 2004 whose visual style was aped by MP3, most notabl in the cinematics featuring quick cuts, freeze frames and spoken dialoge being displayed over images as white text.

Reminder to watch Max Payne: The Movie
>>
>man on fire the video game with an organ theft ring thrown in

please stop pretending this game is anything else. it was a nice tps but the story was a blatant rip off and half assed.

>unskippable cutscenes
That's not true though, at least on PC. It was loading the level while the cutscene played. better than looking at a loading screen if you ask me. Not sure about console though? Maybe the load times on those were so long it took the entire cut scene to load, kek.

Unrelated to that reply;
I have Max Payne 3 on disk for PC, and the game will never launch. I've already played though it once but whenever I launch it now the application doesn't open, yet the process still shows up in task manager. I've tried reinstalling the whole game, I've tried patches and everything. Anybody know what could be wrong?

When I was watching this movie Max Payne was in the back of my mind the whole way through.

>missing the point
All of that could have been better had it been placed in a location the audience could relate to. You don't even get to explore or learn about Brazil. It's shallow as fuck.

Also if you are at all familiar with portuguese the game is insufferable because the voice acting is truly abominable. Borderline gibberish.

Gameplay was excellent.
Story was meh.
It's still got some great one-liners though.

>shit is fucking interchangeable.
No it's not you fucking dumbass. Almost nobody here is at all familiar with favelas but pretty much everyone here can identify with 1st world big city life because we're constantly exposed to it if only by the media if not real life.

There is nothing interchangeable about it. One is alien to the other.

>you need a college education to understand MP3
All of my lel

The point is that it's a shit argument that intellectual cowards hide behind because they can't deal with their tastes being criticized.

Besides, the symbolism and metaphors in MP3 are so juvenile and devoid of subtlety that it's an insult to the viewer's intelligence. But it makes sense that a turbo-fag like you likes getting things forced down his throat.

the game is programmed in such a way that it won't start loading the next gameplay segment until it's done buffering the cutscene currently playing

which is why you can load any checkpoint from main menu in ~15 seconds but still have to sit through the first 2-3 minutes of every other cutscene (also pausing the fucking things stops the buffering as well you can't skip them that way either)

why rockstar even came up with this system instead of just making load times work like in any other game i couldn't begin to guess
>>
>>333377161

Making anything and putting it in New Shitass York is fucking gay. I can't think of a single goddamn setting more overused, boring, gay, and stupid.
>>
>>333377843
why did they even use prerendered cutscenes in the first place, there was no excuse it for in 2012 and there still isn't one today. use of them should be banned and prosecutable.
>>
>>333378424
Because it's "cinematic"
