I've owned it since it came out, never played it. Haven't completed any FFs before this one. Is it worth my time?

It's got a good combat system the game just thinks you're an idiot and holds it back from you until you get through a third of the game.
That and it's super linear until the last part.
Apart from those two big flaws it's really quite good and doesn't deserve the shit it gets.

Neat graphics and music. Dumb characters. Zones are extremely linear. Combat CAN be interesting if you work with the paradigm system. But you don't have access that till you beat the first significant boss.
Overall it's not as bad as everyone says but it is pretty mediocre.

Sazh is okay, the actual areas look okay, the postgame isn't too bad, and getting to chapter 11 and seeing everything is fun.
The problem is that it's like 15-20 hours to actually get to chapter 11, it's constantly switching out characters every half an hour which means you need to switch Paradigms over and over and over again since it doesn't save the setup ever, there's no real challenge outside of postgame, there's a huge amount of grind postgame, and outside of the chapter 11 area there's nothing to explore at all.

How many years have you been on /v/?
I'd say give it a chance since you already own it. I was in the same boat, never played a FF game (besides Bravely Default), and I ended up liking it alright. The plot moves at a glacial pace for most of the game and you have no control over party composition for the first ~half (maybe more) of the game. The combat isn't very good, there's generally little advantage to micromanaging your character's actions besides miniscule time savings. Strategy is mostly defined by character building and party composition (paradigm shifts), and you don't get full control over paradigms until halfway through to game.
I finished the game and had little interest in playing more of it. I enjoyed the characters and the soundtrack was fantastic so I picked up the sequel, which improves in a lot of ways. However it's the worst PC port I've ever seen so I probably won't finish it.
I loved it.
Not after 30 hours in, but from the get go.
The gameplay does get more fleshed out the more you advance in the game, but the characters and the story hooked me right in the beginning. Yes, it can be extremely cheesy and cliche, but I liked it nontheless.
It's not for everyone though. I guess you will have to try it out.

I enjoyed it. It's very heavily narrative focused and has zero in the way of exploration. The game takes a long while to unlock the whole combat system, but at the same time the combat is unlike any other FF game (until XIII-2 happened) so it makes sense they'd want to ease people into it. Give it an hour or two and if you aren't digging the characters, story, or the core combat stuff that's unlocked I'd skip it.

Not worth anyone's time it has good music and looks pretty. Everything is pretty much terrible. Sazh is probably the least hateable character of the party but people here will hate him since he's black. What else there might be good porn since Fang is pretty decent low tier waifu bait. Uhh what else the gameplay could have been cool but is not, did I mention how good the music is? I keep trying to play it and like it since I played most of the FF games but it suffers the same problems X had you walk from the bottom of the map to the top of the map it has no good sense of exploration even though the locales look fucking beautiful. Oh yeah the summons and gestalt gauge are fucking garbage.
If you can take enough adderal or ritalin to just sit and play it it's possible to beat since it nearly plays itself the only filters are "did you do the thing we wanted you to do in order to win here?" The paradigm system would have been cool if you could play as more than one character but it's mostly a step down from the gambit system of 12.
Hey you know what is worth your time? FF12. FF12 is if starwars was in ivalice but it's a better final fantasy than 13 is. Go play FF12 and if you like it or want more of a challenge play FF12 international zodiac job system version.

You get an Eternity Crystal which pretty much guarantees you "It's hot like a summer's day" or "It's on fire!" at the slot machine, and a Serah and Lightning mask adornment if you played XIII. Do you get anything in LR for playing either?
XIII is mediocre. Not bad, but not good either. The sequels got progressively better, with XIII-2 being good and Lightning Returns being great.

The only Eidolon worth it is Vanille's because she can use it to cast Death on Long Guis before you can actually kill them just through proper fighting. Everyone else is weak, not worth the bar you need to spend to summon them, and the amount you spend to summon one is better spent on just using Libra on an enemy so the AI isn't completely retarded when fighting whatever it is you're fighting.

As for 12 it has way more fran ass than 13 has and vanille ass just doesn't compete. Go back and play just the first hour of ff12 skipping cutscenes and try to come back and say that it's not miles ahead of the first playable hour of 13.

FF13 is absolutely superior to FF12. Better characters, better combat, better gameplay, better music, better graphical design.
I will give you story for FF12. FF12 has a decent story while FF13 has an okay story.
Voice acting is basically on par with each other.

I have to concede that the gambit system really only lets you have some fun setups once you've unlocked a fair amount of gambit if then modifiers which can take as long as the intro to 13. So the paradigms are basically a streamlined version of the gambit system WHICH should have been all unlocked on IZJS version or a newgame+ mode.
