The ds graphics are so bad you'll enjoy it more on a smaller screen.
The XL is nice until you try to play anything on it, and you end up with ugly polygons and rescaled pixel art
In this case smaller=better. Get a used Lite or a DSI and a flashcart and kaboom, you're good to go. The DS had a fucking amazing library so it's completely worth it.
