That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Bastard Sword" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Katanas deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.
I should know what I'm talking about. I myself saw a former friend piss away his money commissioning a knock-off katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and had to sit through his awful attempts at practicing with it for almost 2 years now. He can't even cut through watermelons with the fucking thing.

Japanese smiths spend two weeks at best working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to make up for the fact they made it out of scavenged trash scrap metal.

Katanas are thrice as sharp as marshmellows and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can probably scrape off the ground afterwards. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash so long as he was already brought 90% of the way there by a superior claymore.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too disgusted with the dirty child-rapists that were the "disciplined Samurai" and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first in their barracks because even back then they knew these were genuine autists.

So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the dumbest shit that the world has ever seen, and thus, require realistic stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:

(One-Handed Exotic Weapon)
1d2 Damage
20-20 x1 Crit
+2 to DEX due to being hollow aluminum foil basically
-4 to DEX as you immediately gain two weight classes' worth of fat on your jowls and gut
-5 to CHA from the instantaneous neckbeard that sprouts upon equipping, and the horribly tacky cosplay accessories

Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in real life, don't you think?

false comparion
first of all cutlasses were top heavy cuttign beasts, and you could use them with a shield so they are already better than longswords just because of this, if both are unarmored
but long swords have a bigger reach obviously and in armored you can halfsword much more effectively
btw weight isnt much of an issue, a longsword probablyw eights like 2kg max and a cutlass 1.5 kg max, they are all pretty light...
>>
>katana

Curved swords are the most widely used and produced swords in human history. They literally out-phased straight swords wherever they were introduced.
>>
Do you think melee combat will ever be as prominent as back before the invention of firearms?

For example, in Dawn Of War, you have jet pack troops that jump to the enemy and fight with swords, so that they can't use their guns.
>>
>>333309962
That's it. I'm sick of all this "Fighters-only Monkey Grip feat" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Monks deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself bought a genuine monk in Tibet for 24 goats (that's about $3) and have been practicing with him for almost 2 years now. I can even break slabs of solid steel with his simple technique.

Tibetan monks spend years working on a single finger and exercise it up to a million times to produce the finest hands known to mankind.

Tibetan hands are thrice as strong as European hands and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a knight's gauntlet can cut through, a monk's hands can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a monk could easily decapitate a knight wearing full plate with a half-hearted uppercut.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Tibet? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined monks and their fists of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted unarmed monks first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Fists are simply the best weapon that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for monk fists:

(One-Handed Exotic Weapon) 1d12 Damage 19-20 x4 Crit +2 to hit and damage Counts as Masterwork

(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon) 2d10 Damage 17-20 x4 Crit +5 to hit and damage Counts as Masterwork

Now that seems a lot more representative of the rip-and-tearing power of fists in real life, don't you think?

tl;dr = Monk fists need to do more damage, see my new stat block.

katana isnt some magical weapon, its a piece of sharpened metal, so yes u can halfsword it, just hold it in the middle and the handle so u can easly control the point and trust into an opening, chances are slim, but it is much better than just hitting on an armor and bending your sword and dying

But i doubt many martial schools i japan practioned halfsword, but rather proposed thrusting with your sword.

>>
>>333310598
Not really, no. Even with aerial infantry swooping down at you, you'd be generally more successful just shooting them point-blank than trying to clash weapons with them.

Our only real hope are integrated melee/ranged weapons, things like a staff with a disruptive power field enveloping the top that could be used to increase its striking force or be shot from afar in the form of energy bolts.

>>
>>333311321
Sometimes you just gotta do things for the sake of the game and balance even if it don't make no sense. Otherwise everyone would just use spears or something and loads of weapons would be totally useless.
>>
>>333311878
I'm talking about shitty countries, like Spain, Romania, the Ottoman Empire, Japan, and France. They historically used molds.
>>
>>333308067
No, it does make the sword slightly curved due to the folding, but if done correctly it's not-too-bad method to eliminate impurities by burning them. You do need to make a special kind of iron for it to be done effectively, but the reason antique japanese swords tended to suck was their smeltering system, the folding and everything is fine in itself.

The sharp edge of a katana is sharp because of the quenching process, it has nothing to do with folding.
>>
>>333307486
I feel that, honestly. I sorta get why it's exotic, but I feel like that should be reserved for more unconventional weapons like Urumi or Flails.

The hardness rating of thecsword is quite high, but as a trade-off it will not bend. Unlike most other Asian, Middle Eastern or European swords...if a Katana bends even slightly, it stays bent.

Yes, chain and plate are very effective against slashing weapon.
Katanas are made to rend flesh and cloth, since common footsoldiers were often too poor to afford armor.

Define generic crusader get-up. There were a number of crusades, one started with some poor peasant european fanatics getting wrecked, for example, but they technically still were "crusaders".

If you're talking about the standard chainmail + gambeson + helmet combo, then no, katanas wouldn't cut it. Pun intended. What you need against that, as far as swords go, is a pointy stabbity sword to go through the links unhindered at the point, and thrust like a motherfucker. Still not great though. Swords were mostly side-weapons. If you are equally armored, rush the guy, parrying with your sword, then clinch, make him fall, and go full MMA on his ass before drawing your dagger and pushing it against his throat/eyes.

So no, katanas wouldn't work against "crusader" armor, but most swords neither.

Kek. No swordsfags in this thread.

Katana may not be the best sword out there, but it is popular for a reason. It is "very forgiving in the cut". You maybe be able to achieve the same cut with another sword with enough skill, but with a katana the cut basically performs itself.

Find another webm with any other type of sword cutting though multiple matts.

Define shitty.

You mean, as in having lots of impurities? Iron sand? It did not a lot more impurities in it than other sources, iron is iron. Now, iron mixed with slag sucks, so, how do we get the slag out?

Two ways, first is when collecting the iron. Which is why modern katanas made with antique techniques, but iron that has been collected with modern method will have way, way better blades than historical katanas.

The second time to "purify" the iron is during the smeltering process, japanese smelters sucked dick, so it wasn't that effective. So they added a third stage, the folding, in which you "burn" the slag away. All the slag? Nope. And which is why historical katanas do not have very good blade compared to a good part of the rest of the world.

But yeah, all iron is impure as it is found in nature, and japanese sources are not overwhelmingly bad in that regard.
>>
>>333317649

I was expecting a good amount like 4 or 5. Step it up kohai.

For Honor. Game LOOKS cool, but outside of that it basically plays like a dumbed down Mount and Blade (directional combat).

It's also Ubishit, so there's that. I'd ignore it and wait for Bannerlord, or if you're into something like Chivalry, look into Mordhau (the game, not the technique).

Probably not. Danish axes are mighty fine weapons, but all axes tend to have thick heads, at the very least when wood meets metal. And in these tests, fine swords are king. You don't need a sword tough enough to meet bone, you don't need to worry about resilience. What you need is to cut through X mats, so make it fine, don't make it bend, and go to town.

Also, most swords in these tests are slimmer than their historical counterparts. As some are made to cut through tatami mats in a safe environment, and the other are a side arm to use in warfare. So it's a sword optimized for tatami cutting in the shape of a nodachi, but not representative of historical nodachi.
