Best AssCreed is Black Flag and that's entirely because it didn't feel like an AssCreed game.
The concept is fucking great but the execution has been shit from day one. The first one has some fresh and interesting mechanics but they grew stale after 4 hours. It was beautiful though and the graphics hold up to a degree.

Thing is, the entire Assassins / templars thing was a very grey area back then. You could see both sides of the story. Later games saw templars become handlebar mustache villains tying women to railway tracks and chuckling.

As far as feeling like an assassin, this game is undisputed. Character wise Altair is the best assassin. Story wise it's pretty interesting if a bit repetative which can be overlooked.
Atmosphere wise this game blows every other game in the series the fuck out.
The Kingdom is the still by far the best area in the entire series.
Also, while the game is incredibly easy, it is still more difficult than any other AC, since the other games are all a joke difficulty wise.

it was the same three mission concepts, there's a difference. the eavesdrop conversations were all different, the minor assassinations grew increasingly difficult, as did the parkour missions. honestly the only side missions that i didn't think were fun was the pickpocketing, way too easy.
I legitimately liked all AC games up to Revelations.
The Revelations and 1 have their problems, but 1's atmosphere and Revelations' ending trumps them for me.
The Assassin's Creed series died when Desilets left.

Best two AssCreeds are 1 and 4. It seems like people are solely focusing on the lack of mission variety on the original- how many actually completed it? I started and finished it in a single day, something I've never been motivated to do in any other in the series. 2 was a huge letdown, they completely changed the controls from 1 which I felt were great. In 2 they were way more automated and overly streamlined.
Anybody else want Egyptian AssCreed? Set way in the past at the time of the pharaohs, they could do things like have you climb a half-finished pyramid, you could boat down the nile and things too. They could also switch it up so instead of playing as a single assassin, you jump through time after each major kill to the time of the next pharaoh and the game slowly becomes more advanced as you go on.
