Yeah, there is a monopoly on exclusivity with providers. A lot of major ones would literally have to dig holes and paths for cables to link to their service hubs, so that they can then connect you to it.
Problem is with getting the permission to do so, weighing cost versus demand in those areas, etc.
A lot of smaller independent companies piggy back off of major ones to do the digging and provide the service. And then undercut and force major ones to improve ther service and reduce price. And then they get bought out.
Unless you live in a major city or experimental area like Chicago, you're going to get fucked by that 1 contract 1 provider bullshit.
And it's a legal monopoly thanks to loopholes. Thank god those net neutrality laws were never put into motion. Online gaming would've doubled your rates for Internet service.

Before that I got stuck in an apartment that only had dsl. In 2010. Every time it rained the internet would go out because of an exposed wire somewhere between my building and outside world.
Right now I have cheap internet because I don't want to pay fucking $80 a month for something better than 3mbps. down.
