What happened to the "better-than-it-has-any-right-to-be" genre of games?

Did vidya costs really skyrocket so much in 7th gen that quality shovelware isnt allowed to exist?
>>
>>333250939
Well, they were singularities from the beginning anyway so their disappearance doesn't really surprise me that much considering the lack of movie-based vidya on the first place.
>>
>>333250939

Yes. That exactly what happened. In the PS2 days there was a diverse spectrum of game price points, now or's AAA or Indie.
>>
>people actually played as legolas

who Aragorn master race here?
>>
>>333251238
muh nigga

I thought his version of the uruk bane move was the tightest shit and would autistically practice it in my room when no one was looking

Who says they don't exist?

they do, it's your expectations and perception of video games that has changed.

I didn't play TTT, but anyone who used Legolas or Gandalf in ROTK was a pussy ass bitch.

>>333251549
gandalf was the best
>the spells are actually just retextured arrows and as such have hilarious animations when they bounce off of armor

>>333251417
Maybe you should consider if games have gotten worse or if your tastes have become more selective than they were when you were younger, or indeed, if you just like video games less than you did at the time.
>>
>>333251973
Honestly, you don't have to look that hard to find this-gen adaptations that actually had sincere effort put into them and are, at the least, respectful of their source material rather than a total cash-in.
>>
>>333252372
news on sequel fucking when?
>>
>>333251973
I really hope Sega let's Creative Assembly do more shit than strategy, this game proved they can. Though their plate does seem to be full with Halo Wars and Total War right now.

Never.

this entire series are double adaptations, and still manage to be humorous parodies of their source material and well-made games, even if they're rather samey
>>
>>333251359
The amount definitely dropped though. And your examples aren't exactly tie-ins to upcoming products

>>333252741
because EA owns star wars IP for about a decade and arcade is dead so no Jurassic World lightgun game

You didn't specify they had to be tie-ins to upcoming products. These are mostly adaptations of contemporary products. Most of the LEGO games are tie-ins, though - Lego The Force Awakens was just listed on Steam, for example. The Stick of Truth had a three-part tie in episode in the show. Mad Max was tangentially related to Fury Road.

Tabletop games have gotten a wealth of decent video game adaptations recently. I wish I had more faith in Total War: Warhammer.

Shovelware doesn't mean licensed games. All of those were made by devs who had put out great games before, and had fairly large budgets. None of these fall under "better-than-it-has-any-right-to-be" genre.
>>
>>333252841
>EA owns star wars IP
Yes, but because of Lucasfilm had to prevent word from getting out that TFA was a literal copy of ANH, no one was allowed to know the plot, so no tie in games were possible.

No Jurassic games (at home) is entirely asinine. Good dinosaur games are an oil well waiting to be mined. Though I'd give the world to have old Sega make another Jurassic light gunner (the Raw Thrills turret shooter is god awful)
>>
>>333253095
No tie-in game was going to be made anyways since battlefront 3 was in development at the time. not to mention we know nothing of Visceral's game and they've been teasing it for two years though the safe rumor is uncharted: han solo
>>
>>333251238
yeah he was the best of the three, i played through the campaign with each of them. who used Isildur tho lol

So does the game in OP's pic. For fuck's sake, Stormfront Studios a name that 4chan has made retroactively hilarious for me made Neverwinter Nights, EA's NASCAR series, and Stronghold! Return of the King's game was made by the same studio that made some of the best 007 games post-Goldeneye.

Consider the previous South Park games, the previous Alien game, Mad Max's devs hadn't made anything interesting in five years, and the fact that Shadow of Mordor's devs hadn't made a game like it before.

All of those are better than they had any right to be.

the best part of the Two Towers game was that the devs knew that the game wouldn't have enough story, so they did the first 2 movies in 1 game and it worked extremely well.
>>
>>333258290
Yeah that was pretty good, not to mention the palantir bonus level for each character.
