They got rid of them by ejecting them into the void because thats what got rid of them, not necessarily killed them.
Note how the one in the first movie used its tail to try and get back in through the thrusters and how the Queen in the second is still flailing around and screeching when it gets blasted out. Its been constantly speculated that they don't need to breathe at all so why can't they be in a vacuum as long as they can keep grounded to something?
