I riked it. Sequel has more polished gunplay, but the driving was a drag (heh). Ironically, ND makes great racing games.

Trash compared to the original. Appeals to the same group of people as something like Sonic Adventure 2.

Love it. Best in the series if we're gonna be real here but I can understand completely if someone prefers the pureness of the first. Even though it rode the GTA trend wagon it still implemented those elements amazingly. I still find the gameplay solid and some locations like the support pillar of the castle awe-inspiring to this day.

>Even though it rode the GTA trend wagon it still implemented those elements amazingly.
Really? I felt that the shooting and open world driving were all shallow, tacked on and poorly implemented.
>>
>>333243248
They were all natural evolution of mechanics in the previous game. Guns were derived from shooting eco in 1 and the vehicles were derived from the zoomer in 1. I can concede that the driving in 2 is more shallow that 1 and that is due to the poor execution and how they were only there to help you move around the world faster.

Jak 1 is a fun 3d platformer
Jak 2 is complete trash in every possible way

You did that maybe once or twice? You weren't doing it throughout the whole game and the enemies were designed in such a way that it didn't really matter that you couldn't use proper shooting controls when it happened. Jak 2 swarms you with powerful enemies that you struggle to aim at while also positioning yourself, because the gun controls were an afterthought.

It's bad. Great example of how not to do a sequel. Shows how popular trends corrupt game design.

t. Didn't play it when I was 12.
>>
>>333243659
It was in many areas particularly the swamp if I'm not mistaken, part of a big boss fight, and a large part of the final boss.
>Jak 2 swarms you with powerful enemies that you struggle to aim at while also positioning yourself, because the gun controls were an afterthought.
The guns are meant to be used in tandem with your melee to increase damage output while using them alone give you a long range option. If you're not using the guns continuously with melee you're playing the game wrong and you're most likely going to have a tougher time in general. And it's clear that it is not an afterthought mainly due to the fact that the snap-on managed to feel natural and not jerky in the slightest to help with precision at longer ranges.
>>
>>333243657
I don't understand how you could possibly like it. I played all 3 in the same week. The difference in quality was clear

Ive replayed both 1 and 3 since. Will never touch 2 again

>>

>>
>>333243967

The swamp was the most characteristic example yeah. It's what I remember. In the swamp you have those little critters coming from the spawner, but they're only ever coming from in front of you in corridor environments. It's quite easy to keep enemies in the line of fire. Add on that a generous homing capability and the shooting in the swamp was fine.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're convinced Jak's shooting controls were tight then the first Ratchet had the best shooting controls of the series too.
>>
>>333244505
Jak's controls were about as good as they were gonna get without being completely mindless or turning it into an actual TPS.
>>
>>333244652

Exactly right. That's why I think it was a bad idea to attempt that route at all.
>>
>>333244720
So rather than push the mechanic to a higher, more fleshed out level they should have let it stagnate and clash with the design of the game overall or just straight up remove it altogether? Considering the controls are actually good and mesh well with how Jak controls in 3D space, it would be a complete waste to do so and you're exactly the kind of wasteful person that would squander that.
>>
Jak II is my favorite, and I'm pretty sure it's 100% because I played it a fuckton as a kid.

I like the world, I like the gameplay, I love love love the music.

I would say that Jak and Daxter is the best game of the series, but Jak II is my favorite.
>>
>>333244875

>So rather than push the mechanic to a higher, more fleshed out level

I'm getting mixed messages here.

Just because I didn't like the gameplay innovating in a certain way does not mean I didn't want the gameplay to develop at all.

And who are you to say that your opinion on how it innovated is the correct one when you are in fact part of a very small minority.
I don't see how you got mixed messages with that. The transition from 1 to 2 fleshed it out and gave it more depth. The general control scheme and how it operated was about as good as it could get with 2. 3 at most worked out some kinks and made it a bit smoother.
>>333245087
You must not play too many games. There are plenty of games with actually bad music out there and music by Josh Mancell is certainly not bad.

It's a fantastic OST that has a lot of different vibes and exemplifies the action and locations on-screen perfectly.

JaknDak has a pretty standard soundtrack that gives you some good island, jungle and adventure vibes. It's a great soundtrack, but in its genre it doesn't necessarily stand out.

I really like the gloomy, industrial soundscape in Jak II. I like that the instruments come in heavy, but the undertones are soft. I think it's a perfect soundtrack for a game where you're exploring and platforming in one moment and fighting in the next.

To this day, Haven City Walking is one of my favorite overworld tracks in all of video games. I love that it has several variants based on how you're moving through the city and whether or not guards are chasing you. It all works so well.

The series has fantastic music across the board, but Jak II really shines for me.

Ratchet had better gunplay and Sly had better platforming. Jak has so much goddamn genre and tonal whiplash that it's all over the place like the devs never at any single point knew what the fuck kind of game they wanted to make.

It's seriously one of the worst mainstream games I have ever played and the faggots who defend it should have their gaming devices physically revoked.

You want a list?

>Retarded shift from goofy/silly with serious lore to "I'M GONNA KILL PRAXIS" and dark powers with evil elf man
>Boring flavorless overworld that exists only to compete with GTA3
>Speaking of overworld, missions that open up at the opposite end of the map for no reason other than to get you to traverse this pointlessly large overworld (which has multiple dead ends)
>Missions have no checkpoints. While this wouldn't be a huge problem, health and ammo are sparse, making any level with a time limit or escort fucking excruciating
>Vehicles control like butter-soaked horse shit on ice
>Story is boring
>Game can never decide if it wants to focus on shooting, platforming, racing, or vehicles.

>Jak 1
A fun light hearted collectathon. Bit too easy and only really saved in the writing side of things by some of the witty npc dialogue.

>Jak2
My favourite. It's not the game game as 1 at all. Incredibly challenging and atmospheric while still keeping the humour and good writing. The main issues were some rather unmerciful checkpoint locations, the scarcity of ammo and transit across the city getting a bit tiring once the whole place opened up. It really needed a fast travel once the whole city was accessible.

>Jak 3
Decent, but a thematic mess that tries to do elements of the first two games but ends up really cluttered. It kept the mission and heavy combat focus of 2 while at the same time bringing the difficulty back to around that of 1's, which was a bad idea because heavy combat emphasis is only fun when it's challenging. The desert was a bore. The best parts were light jak and the weapon mods.

All in all if you revisit jak 2 and jak 3 you'll find yourself wishing you had 3's weapons in 2, and wishing you had 2's enemies to use the weapons on in 3.

You don't have to dance around the bush, it's still me.

I state my opinion as fact because there's no point in saying "in my opinion" on this site. Entertainment is subjective, no shit. I went into the Jak series completely unbiased: Bought the HD collection for cheap, never grew up with the games, don't care about NaughtyDog.

1 is okay, hasn't aged well and is really obviously a PS2 launch title.

I wasn't kidding about 2. I hate this game. I rank it up with Assassin's Creed 3 and Bioshock Infinite as some of the worst mainstream games I've had the displeasure of playing.

3 alleviated a lot of 2's issues, but it's still only okay.

Same reason call of duty sells every year, people dont respond well to change. I would welcome more evolution in games, but the masses are extremely casual I believe, and find comfort in sameness

The exception being party games, as unless the next one adds more content, whats the point of buying it? I think thats why rockband and guitar hero fell from grace so fast, just adding new songs doesnt cut it
>>

>call of duty sells every year

I still just don't understand this. I don't understand Madden.

Like, I just don't get it. Why do they sell? Who buys it? What are the numbers? Is it a budget release or does it sell high numbers?

Anyways.

Say what you want about Nintendo, but even when they milk a franchise to death, they do it with only one iteration per-system. NSMB has only one game on DS, one game on Wii, one game on 3DS, and one game on Wii U.

Ratchet, on the other hand, has 5 games on PS2, 4 games on PS3, and a new one for PS4. That's not including spin-offs. Fucking 10 games in 14 years.

It's not that good. It's not awful but the same fags who liked linkin park at the time will say "no way dude, it was actually really good"
It's genetic gta clone shit and would have been better if they'd made jak and daxter 2 instead
