I tried to get into this game but the start was too overwhelming and I couldn't find any guides. How am I supposed to know if I can take an enemy? What should I do at the beginning of the game? Not every ship has an officer, but fleets usually have at least a few. You can hire up to 10 to be in your fleet in the vanilla game.

If you're serious about fighting in your starter ship instead of doing mining in the first few minutes of the game, you want to buy the highest tier crews available to you in the market.
You're also very low leveled so your CR will tank fast, especially on a frigate as they're not built for long engagements. Think of it as your avatar still not knowing how to properly take command of his ship.

It was a pretty cool silky smooth 10 fps battle. Not included in the picture is my Maelstrom, Haze, Gust and Hayle each complimented by a Valiant and a Blizzard. By the end of the battle we had no Valiants left.
The real problem was the huge Hegemony strike fleet that came right after. We won but it took out our Hayle.

So whats a good faction to start as in SS+ I tried SY and it felt lackluster especially the large energy slots.
So I was mining and waiting for Corvus to get raped by pirates yet again when a 4-1-0-0 pirate fleet surprised me armed with pulsed beams for mining and no other anti hull weapon
