I've played the game.
The writing sucks!
Every single dialogue I've seen, with two exceptions boils down to the following choices.
1. Paladin
2. Wisecracking dick
3. Jew
4. Axe murderer
There are never any other choices. The two exceptions are when either, ALL answers are wisecracking dicks or when you talk to the tranny. There you can be supportive, supportive or excuse yourself and go.
New characters?
Currently I have only Neera and Corwin, the single mom in my group.
Corwin is tolerable. Her strong bisexual woman role is being pushed, but the actual character is fine. I attribute that solely to the fact that she is a soldier and therefore resistant to "quirky" dialogue.
The other NPC is Neera. Now, Neera was decent in BG1 and BG2, she had weak moments, jarring sentences that made her sound like a mid 20s American woman, but those were rare.
In SoD however she is soo random and soo quirky. It's horrible. She is a fishmalk if you know what that means.
They literally can't write Neera not stark raving mad in their attempt at humor.
Sucks, because some of the design choices are otherwise pretty great. Like the stat comparison screen for new weapons, or giving infravision a purpose.
This game is dragged down by its writing team. There is no other way to say it. I'm pretty sure it's just one writer, because the dialogue that feels really wrong always reads the same.
An attempt at quirky humor coupled with heavy virtue signaling.

There are also some gameplay and gamedesign faults.
It's my honest opinion that the fun you can have in SoD comes from the great groundwork dudes in the 90s have made, not from Beamdogs work. At best they give you new adventures in BG, but the framework was already in place.
At worst...
The game has some questionable design decisions. My critique is in no way complete. So take my post as listing of examples.
You can zoom out now, but if you scroll too far to the right (or it's inside) you will see lots of black spaces, immersion breaking and ugly.
More NPCs can be shown on screen now. The packed streets of BG look great, until you realise that your party can't actually walk through people, so they might as well be walls for pathfinding.
There are also battles with many, many combatants, which look and feel good, until you realise that all your enemies are just fodder and the dangerous ones choke on your allies or get stuck in their own people.
It also makes looting all that shit horrible
Speaking of big battles, the game has lots and lots and lots of random encounters. Spiders, Orcs, Goblins, Trolls, Ogres, Hobgoblins. All these things are no real danger to you by the end of BG1, so their numbers are increased, which gets tedious after a while. There are maps where you can't walk a screen without stumbling into the next group of 15 humanoid monsters.
Sometimes these monsters are mixed with random encounters. There is one map where a man stands in front of a ruin, that guy is a trader. Next to him, like 10 meters, is a group of wights (they drain levels now) and zombies. Right behind the man, in the ruin, lies a fresh, dead woman and in the cellar is a young vampire (with undead fodder, of course).
That's all on one screen and nothing is connected. The man says nothing about the vampire, or the dead woman or the monsters, nothing!

70% of new items are some specialist item or another. Like armor for a goblin or an amulet that gives +1 dexterity but +2 for archers or half a dozen items for bards. My favourite in niche items was a cleric specific amulet that could only be worn by one, ONE kind of cleric.
Other items have questionable effects, like 10% to create a gem on hit for 30 charges or 10% to increase strenght (non cumulative) for 1 round by 1 on hit or +5% to crits.

You might not like it, but definitely give it a try. It comes off as a sort of bridge between old rpgs that were kind of light on storytelling, and modern BG2-style stuff with party banter and so on.
Add in low level DnD, terrible pathfinding, and dickloads of maps that have nothing at all on them, and you might not want to waste your time on it.
