>I’ve been told once or twice that the bisexual or gay characters I wrote for Borderlands 2 were arbitrary and forced. This is one hundred percent true. I did not have any particular stories to tell about human sexuality — I just randomly chose a few characters and decided that they weren’t heterosexual. I had no “reason” to do so other than the belief that a cast of sexually diverse characters is better than a sexually homogenous one.

>Did it hurt the story? Maybe. Maybe it feels arbitrary that certain female characters mention their wives, or that certain male characters just happen to have several occasions to mention their boyfriends. I’d like to think that I knew this might have been a problem when I wrote the characters in the first place — that by making the cast more diverse and drawing attention to it, I’d be making the story worse.

>On the upside, though — and this is going to sound tremendously arrogant, but stick with me for a few more paragraphs – while arbitrarily diverse casts might make the story worse, they make world better. Not the in-fiction world, either; I mean, you know, the world. The actual one. The one you and I are in. Real life.

Is this a fair thing to say?
>>
Yes, if you're a big libcuck
>>
Well, to be fair i heard that they got a lot of people who wrote in saying "thank you for adding gay/bisexual people into the game", probably cause they feel relatable or something, and that the number of people who complained about this was far outweighed. I'm not justifying any SJW bullshit, but that's something to think about.

How
Fucking how
Explain this bullshit right now
>vidya violence does not make actual violence happen, our hobby is so sophisticated and cool and art :^)
>Oh but women in vidya not wearing coveralls make real life misogyny an rape happen
>and my characters being gay makes the world better place
I mean does he realize how fucking far up his own ass he is?
>oh yeah me writing characters that are DIVERCE to this vidya that reaches percent of the world's population and no one plays for the story or gives a flying fuck about it totally MAKES THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE
>man I'm such a great person
I don't even give a flying fuck about arbitarily diverse cast or other such hot meme buzzword bullshit but his reasoning is full of shit
>>
>>333195285
It's fair to say, but it's not necessarily true, and it would be very hard to prove. Moreover, diversity just for the sake of diversity is stupid. Especially if the idea is basically "we will normalize diversity".
>>
The capitalism of culture. When will these Westerners stop?

characters should tell you their story, as such randomly picking non hetero from a cast is cheap, and then pinning it as making the world better because showing gay is normal is an excuse.

and I don't live on pol so thats all I have to say on the matter.

>probably cause they feel relatable or something
But why would that make them feel relatable? Is a gay man incapable of connecting to a straight character? Is a straight woman incapable of empathizing with a gay one? Is anyone capable of connecting to any of the characters in the puddle deep plot of a shitty looter shooter? These are the questions that need to be asked when you're trying to make a statement or serve a narrative function. But you can safely ignore them when you're trying to win brownie points with people who don't actually play your games.

Hell April first when everyone got a random name NOBODY was Anthony Burch. Feels amazing
>>
People do tend to get butthurt. Most video game characters do not have any significant character development. A few writers put in some LGBT backstories to some minor to maybe a few important characters and everyone cries fowl about how forced and badly written they are.

Unless the story is trying to force their agenda I don't see why it's such a big deal.

Having every other character be some lgbtbbq isn't at all realistic. They make up 1% (not 10%) of the population. I've lived 30 years without one person saying to me, "oh btw, I'm gay." in real life.

By having them fed into a wood chipper when they're introduced.
non-shitpost answer: either don't bring it to the forefront--a gay person's sex life should pop up about as often as a straight person's, or have it be meaningful in the context of the narrative's thematic goals. New Vegas did both of those well. A number of gay characters didn't really have much to say about their sexual orientation and the few times sexual orientation was brought to the forefront, such as Major Knight at the Mojave Outpost and the number of gay or bisexual prostitutes in New Vegas, was used to highlight the social differences between the NCR and New Vegas through the dimension of how they handle sexuality(NCR=concerned with regulating personal behavior and maintaining social cohesion in a very conservative American kind of way, vs New Vegas=anything goes if you got the caps)

>vidya developers think their games can change the world
TOP LAUGHS

Remember MGS2? Remember the shit that spoke about? The audience was too fucking dumb to figure it out, and now we're basically in the world about which Kojima and Fukushima warned us.

Games only change two things: the amount of money the writers have, and how consumers spend their time.

Forcing gay characters into a game would be just fine if it wasn't the crux of their entire character.

Examples include:
>Gannon and Veronica(the go-to example for these threads we have like five times a day)
>Bill from The Last of Us
>Probably a bunch in some RPGS I've never played
>Honey Bee Club in LISA

There's a fine line that writers walk with gay characters, because if they just add them in and have them talk about how they're gay, it's shit writing. If they hide it too well (maybe in a book in the character's house or something) then they're accused of not doing enough.

Do we need stronger characters in video games? Yeah. And some of them should be women, black, Asian, gay, etc. But arbitrarily forcing them into your story is not the way to go about it. But you've gotta remember that it's mostly males buying the games, and they don't tend to buy games with women in it.
