These old-ass MIDI tracks are actually really fucking great. For all its flaws, old RS did some things very well.

Everyone always posts the same tracks in these threads. C'mon, go further afield

But anon, these are the best songs

They're all good, it's just that people tend to posts the songs from the most commonly traveled areas of the game. There are a lot of lesser-known gems out there

Okay, I've never actually discussed this with anyone, so I'll try this thread.
Have any of you ever noticed major differences in Runescape's tracks over the years? I'm not talking about when they went from MIDI to Orchestral shit. Listen to the first 30 seconds these two uploads of the Lumbridge theme. They sound markedly different. The first one is what I remember, and contains a flute completely missing from the second upload. Meanwhile, the second upload sounds like the one currently in OSRS.

Sometimes I'm listening to the music in OSRS and I'm thinking "I remember this sounding different" or containing some kind of instrument not present. And when I look at Youtube uploads, they often sound different.

I've asked this question before. Someone said that it was because Runescape's audio got upgraded way back in 2005 or 2006. It allowed the audio to have more tracks or something. Still haven't found a definitive answer though
one word Camelot

I've noticed this too with different versions of "Aye Car Rum Ba"

That's pretty interesting actually. The one in OSRS doesn't actually sound identical to either. It's missing the flute/oboe from the first one, but otherwise sounds more similar to it. The second one sounds archaic.

I remember this sounding quite different too.

Thanks a lot anon. That guy has uploaded a fuckton of Runescape tracks in their "Upgraded" form. And his videos have such little views. Good find.

I knew there was something missing from OSRS. Why the fuck don't they use these tracks?

Yesss m8. This was my fucking tune. It used to motivate me back 10 years ago
Aha! I did some digging on the wiki and found this post from May 2006:
http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Update:Game_engine_upgraded!
It mentions a major engine update that includes
>Vastly improved sound compatibility, including sound support in Firefox.
>Better sound engine which can play more sounds at once.
Although my memory of the game this long ago is fuzzy, this seems about the right time for when the music quality changed.
