I always save them.

Then never use them, even for the end boss.

All my good consumables just end up being completely wasted.
>>
Save them. I also will always pick the slightly weaker ability that I can use consistently over the really powerful one that has an incredibly long cooldown.

Are we talking common consumables or rare top of the line consumables?

Common ones I'll just use whenever I need them, especially if I can get an infinite supply from a vendor. The more rarer things I'll try to save for bosses and I tend to use them as a last resort if things are going horribly. Full heals/full stat restores/etc

Doesn't every one just use them when your healing magic can't be done, why save them if you need them. I feel like this question just depends on the game.

If they're craftable, go full alchemist mode and make all the crazy potions. Bonus points if I can make poison as well. Nothing like abusing stat boosts to turn you into a god.

If they're collectible, they're junk. I only like it if I feel like I've worked for them, otherwise it's no different to turning down the difficulty. Doesn't count for healing items and mana potions obviously, just mean for buffs.

In Might and Magic 7 you make potions by mixing different reagents together. And there's no real way to know what different reagents will do before mixing them. Exploding in your face is a very common option.

I practice the golden road.

Do not consume or use anything unless you absolutely have to. Hoard everything until you are pretty certain you're at the final dungeon/point-of-no-return/gay nightclub.

At this point, you try and work out the length of the golden road: From this point to credits, how many battles, how long its going to take, you then portion out your trove of supplies so that you are literally drowning in restoratives, stat boosts and damage reduction right up until the end.

The golden road works best in games like Morrowind, its essentially pointless in some games where you might only have medkits or something though, but fuck me if I don't love absolutely destroying the final area on some kind of roid-binge.

Shit you can buy from store I just use whenever.
MP restoration items like Ethers I usually save for bosses, I usually use Tents to get the MP back up.
I usually save the consumeable attack-items, which results in having shitloads of weak items at the end of the game.
Rare stuff like elixirs never get used.
