LA Noire was a great game, it's a shame that the deeper lore was kind of buried

Phelps was never the 'golden boy' he carried himself as, which was the point.
During the war he hid in a foxhole while everyone around him died and got the silver star.
He lectured his fellow soldiers about having sympathy for the Japanese but later broke down and ordered a guy to flamethrower a cave, in case it was a jap ambush point. It turned out to be a makeshift hospital. That vet was traumatized by it and later went onto commit a bunch of arsons.
Sheldon was another comrade of Phelps whom is later revealed to be a drug kingpin after stealing a shipment of army morphine and selling it on the streets. The last cutscene is him and the other soldiers deciding that they were entitled to success as much as that phony Phelps was.
Cole was indirectly responsible for half the crimes in the game.

It is sudden. There is clearly cut content, some rushed shit(like the ending part), some changing in the script. There is a clear change of pace in the story when you do that mission where you are finding clues in town to get the killer.

Phelps was trying to be a justice warrior because of his sins, being a dick sometimes and others a moralist. In the end war fucks people's heads and that was the entire point.
