In most games only select objects interact with the water and the waves often look like shit because of some arbitrary limit on how high they can get, a huge heavy object makes the same size of wave as a tiny light object. I think its because in most games they just use a shader to give the effect of the wave, the surface of the water isn't actually physically deformed.

In resistance 2 there could be huge waves in the water and they would realistically interact with other waves and the walls of the container instead of passing through eachother. All this would be happening on a mp map with 60 players running around.

It's not a bad thing particularly, since not many games _need_ to react to the player or objects, and very detailed water can be very performance-draining.

Actually you can simulate the phisics in any animation tool, them you save the results in a batch animation and you can insert it in the game with a loop, it will look that amazing and will take no resources of the console since it will just play an animation and no extra calculation for the phisics are needed.

Naughty Dog have always been wizards with playstation tech, but the real triumph of the real Crash games was the draw distance they managed to squeeze out of the original original PSX. I remember that making my jaw drop back in the day.

Splashdown for the PS2 was a pretty okay racing game, but the water, the water was %100 fully reactive. You made waves, things made waves, those waves interacted with each other dynamically. It was amazing to see. I even had friends who had me load up the biggest map on their PS2 before I left (the game would continue to run without the disc so long as they didn't exit the level) so they could continue to play around with the water physics after I took the game home.

I miss WoW in some respects, I think I was around 15 when it came out and it's one of the last times I genuinely enjoyed exploring in a video game, just roaming around and enjoying the atmosphere. WoW and Oblivion are the last time I enjoyed doing that, it's a shame; I hate being old and jaded.

Awww man, I want that sense of wonder back. I remember when Skyrim came out, I didn't enjoy a minute of it. It is a shitty game and is full of flaws but I think if I was 12 again I would have spent hours and hours just walking around.

See pic related, I used to play this when I was a kid and think about what lies beyond those pixel representations of mountains in the background. If I had played Skyrim back then my head would have exploded.

Witcher 3's water is the ugliest aspect of the game. I think the biggest problem is how reflections work. They just outright disappear at certain camera angles so all you're left with is a flat blue surface.

GTA5 had pretty good water, especially in motion with huge waves.
