the towns are cozy and very "organic"
the story has an interesting premise but spins its wheels for awhile, then a plot twist happens and everything gets extremely convoluted. characters have light optional backstories if you look for them but are inconsequential after joining the party

Yes, but you should play Trigger beforehand. preferably right beforehand especially if you aren't very familiar with trigger so you don't miss as much shit as 99% of the people who play.
Story is good, there's an infodump at the end but its not too bad. Characters are also good, but you can recruit far more characters than the story ever actually uses so people bitch about that for some reason. Basically if they have a portrait you might be able to recruit them at some point.

good story, but make sure you to pay attention to all the dialogue and item descriptions.
character development isn't that great for 80% of the characters.
I loved the game to death and have played through it maybe 30 times
the battle system is as complex as it is simple.
important things to note: do normal battles after bosses. you can get "mini level ups" which give you more stats similar to a regular level up. it can take up to 5 battles or more sometimes.
for the "advanced" players, check out times anguish. it is a more punishing difficulty mod.
If you are expecting Chrono Trigger 2, no.
If you are expecting an extremely good JRPG, yes.
10/10 game. Just forget that piece of shit Trigger existed if you've played it and you'll enjoy Cross just fine.
