I actually bought a 3d monitor and 3d glasses about 4-5 years ago. (More expensive than current VR.)
Here's the strange thing, it works. Really well, actually. You turn on the 3d, pop on the glasses, and it looks great (maybe a little dark, so turn the lights off in your room).
However, over the years, I just stopped using them. I still have the monitor, it's a nice one, but the glasses/transmitter are in a box I haven't opened in 2 years. Putting shit on your face when you just want to veg out and play games for a few hours is a hassle.
And I can see VR being the exact same deal. Amazing experience, compelling games, but overall kind of a hassle/headache that isn't worth bothering with. I can see where there will be one or two titles worth dragging the headset out of the closet for, but once you're done with that particular game, back in the closet it will go. You're not going to use it to play older, more complex games, and I can't imagine it being comfortable enough for all day gaming.
I could be completely wrong, maybe VR is going to do things so impressive it takes the world by storm. But mobile gaming, waggling, and 3D gaming certainly didn't replace current gaming, despite all those things being "innovative" and all.
I spend stupid amounts of money on vidya, so I'll probably pick one of these headsets up. But I wont be surprised much if I find myself stuffing it in a box 6 months later waiting for that "must have" title that never comes. And I certainly wont be surprised that I don't break it out every time I want to play each and every video game I own.

Who the fuck buys BD porn? BD became big because it had industry-wide support from all the major studios (and the minor ones) after HDDVD tanked. The PS3 contributed to that, but it was a combination of those things that made it king. Porn no longer makes or breaks formats, especially with something like VR which is incredibly niche in the first place. Most people just want to get off and move on with it, it isn't a lifestyle they're gonna drop a thousand dollars on. The reason VR will fail is cost.
Most people don't have a high-end PC. You need a high-end PC to run at least 2 of the 4 VR machines.
For Sony's VR, that shit costs as much as a Playstation 4, and you already need a Playstation 4 to use it. That shit costs a serious amount, and it really only appeals to the more hardcore gaming population, seeing as how you can't watch porn on a Playstation VR machine.
It will appeal to an audience that most likely, doesn't even breach one million people.

This is what's going to happen and this isn't considered failing. Why would it? It's Like what Tesla did with it's cars. Made the roadster at an insane price as a high end car that they only make 500.
