Any recent 4X games worth playing?
>>
Anyone know any youtubers or streamers I can watch to learn more about EL? Kinda like what Filthyrobot does for Civ5.
I bought this game recently and it's hard as fuck.
>>
>>333086924

Initiative is god, science is king like all other 4x games, anything giving a percentile boost is usually worth it, never hang out in a lower tech era unless it's really, really necessary, and happiness is pretty important (the sewer and market buildings are very good at mitigating low happiness)
>>
>>333087313
Well, playing basic stuff like Drakken or Necrophages is easy enough for me, but when I random something less traditional like Forgotten I just can't work out the right approach to doing things, that's why I wanted to watch a good player. And all content that I can find on youtube is mostly old as fuck, before the spy dlc.
Another thing that bugs me is the starting locations - what should I prioritise in my capital? Sometimes I just start in a shitty region with no anomalies nearby in the middle of the forest, is it worth spending couple of turns trying to find a better place? When I get Cultists and see no anomalies or resources in my starting region I just wanna leave the game.
What heroes should I prioritise for commanding the armies? So far I've been gravitating towards ranged ones due to movement bonus, but I haven't really tried the support ones.
The only thing that I fully dislike about the game so far is the way it does world wonders. Instead of being situational long term investments that are useful depending on your playstyle you get one wonder per research era that gives a huge fuckoff boost to the git that gets lucky with resources in his regions, ruins and quests.
>>
>>333088671
You should usually just settle in your first round. Forest is good for production, thus making it easier to build the buildings that boost everything else and you can try to reach anomalies later on.
I found this useful.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyUwHtUoRHM
>>
>>333088671
When it comes to your heroes I think it's the best to pick those from your own faction and concentrate on faction-skills. It's usefull to have one that concentrates more on class-skills, which makes them most of the time better fighters.
>>
Thought not strictly a 4X game, Sins of a Solar Empire is pretty enjoyable, and evokes a similar feeling when playing.
>>
>>333085730
Age of Wonders 3 Is ok
>>
>>333089973
Well, yeah, but heroes from some factions are more useful as governors in particular situations (Cultists for example give bonuses to pretty much everything), Forgotten are only good at spying, Necrophages give a huge boost to food and armour ghost dudes give loadsa gold and so on.
>>
>4x thread
Finally.

Am I the only one who finds MoO2 not that great? The early game on average is really slow, waiting 20+ turns for anything useful for expansion is silly.
>>
>>333091104
Certainly, it's always a good idea to pick some of the other factions heroes. But most of the time the skills of the hero are exactly want his own faction wants, like Necrophages huge boost in food and the Broken Lords boost in Dust. You want to have all the Dust as Broken Lords.

I like the Amplitude guys and am hype for the next expansion and ES2 but 4X has never been deader as a genre.
>>
>>333090161
If it had a solid diplomacy/negotiations system it would be fucking 10/10 in my book. The game begs for unique, characterized factions like most 4x games, but it just falls completely flat in that regard. All 3 of the factions seem to play the same and the ship designs fucking suck for the most part.

Still one of my all-time favorite strategy games.
>>
>>333093354
I'm optimistic about the new MoO, if they can just sort out the tactical combat and the AI it would be great.

Yeah, I played a shit ton of MoO1 and now the nuMoO. I mean, unless I'm missing something, like a good way to start/custom race.. something to let me get really into it. Somethign just feels off, I don't really like waiting 20-40 turns just for a Outpost/colony ship sitting on my ass.

But it does.
>>
>>333095659
You can, but you gotta fully take control of it first, the option is called "Salt the Ground". And then there are Cultists that raze every city they take automatically.
>>
Every time I spawn near the Cultist I may as well just end the game and re-roll. They will ALWAYS declare war before first winter hits and I am forced to spend the rest of the game pumping out units just to stay alive. All the while the remaining factions skyrocket in prosperity.
>>
>>333085730
Doubtful.

Endless Legend seems kind of neat with the terrain and such. AoW3 has nice combat, but the small stack limit makes higher tier units too essential since you can't really swarm them.

That was the one, yes. I admit I knew that one was coming beforehand when I did the playthrough, but that was approximately the reaction I had when I reached that point in the game for the first time. Pandora doesn't win any points as far as innovation goes, but it still gets props for being the first game in a long while that made me go "What the fuck is going on right now?".

I should do another playthrough sometime, though it'll probably be on /v/ since /civ4xg/ has been lost to the ages.

>their city is so close that in every fight they can send their militia
>life or death fight for my empire begins
>had to reload several times, doing just small things differently to make some small progress in this fight
>finally reach a state where both armies just get exhausted
>afterwards turn my whole economy into creating an army of bugs and ogres
>destroy them afterwards
And now the bugs swarm the world and feast on Auriga. Love this game.

It's weird how good Necrophages look compared to boring and generic Cravers that barely have an insect theme to them at all. I hoped they'd improve Craver design in ES2, but nope, they are still just a mess of robot parts.

I'll see if I can drop by for old times sake in case that happens. I don't have as much free time now as I did back then but I should still be able to do another run through the game for the sake of the general.
>>
>>333097240
I played as them and I know that they are strong. But why should I fear them as the bug-people?
>>
>>333096687
Don't forget to put a proliferator in every army. Every enemy that gets hit by a proliferator and then dies in that battle (for any reason) gets resurrected as a default forager unit.

This way you can actually make bigger armies than the game should really allow.

I've had 30 unit armies doing that.
>>
I wish anomalies were spawned better. Some games will drop me in the middle of barren wasteland while others have dragon trees, trees of life, every super anom in the game all crammed into a few hexes.
>>
>necrophage deathstacks in your borders

>>
>>333097491
Yes, I really need more of this things. Those Necrophages remind me of the Undead from other fantasy games.
>>
>>333097491
Zombie hordes are cool, but inability to upgrade them and 4 move speed mean that I usually create different armies out of them and just follow my big guys around. Maybe put a ranged hero on them just for the movespeed.

The technique of building a barebones game only to perfect it later on worked with Civ V (I guess?) but I don't think anyone really appreciated it for this game.

Also lacks a lot of the things that made Civ V shit tons of fun. They could've just copied all of the features from V to BE and renamed them and people would've been alright with it I guess.

What if the other factions start to attack my converted villages?
>>
>>333101351
Was this made by the guys who made Fallen Enchantress?

>>
Recently started on Aurora. It's not that hard, but the frantic need to expand right away due to dwindling resources on Earth is kinda triggering me. The conditional orders don't seem to work right either, meaning I have to give pretty much every order manually. I anticipate that becoming impossible at some point. Still was pretty fun for as long as I played.
>>
>>333099874
I agree.

Also, for a game system where you field customized base units, why do they end up being so bland?

"OK, here you've got an archer and here's your tank. Oh and here's a healer. They do different stuff but they don't have active abilities so they boil down to "attack" and "heal.""

>>
>>333102251
There are several support units that aren't just healers, but have different spells on attack and on friendly units.

You are right that there isn't a huge difference between those units. But the unit composition you end with is never really the same, you have to adopt and make the best out of what your faction gives you and what neutral factions you'll find in your empire. Not to mention that's not only the units itself which makes you assimilate a neutral faction, but also their bonuses. And usully you can specialize units on two things, like ranged units with crossbows to be thougher in melee and with bows to be stronger against fyling units.
>>
>>333101873
You can restore destroyed villages, but it takes extra influence. Offence is the best defence in this case - go and kill those unfaithful fuckers that dare attack your shit.
>>
>>333103250
I will remember this, but first I will try to get good at some of the more "normal" factions. Already got some understanding of the Wild Walkers, Broken Lords and Necrophages. Vaulters are next.
