I had some hope for this game among shitposting, just like for DA:I. While the latter turned out to be disaster, Fallout 4 was geniuely good game (and bad fallout - i know this argument is almost a meme, but it's never really accurate in case of Bethesda Fallouts), with enjoyable shooting and some nice side-activities.
The problem is, this game was kinda repetitive once you realized that besides main story missions you mostly go to location x to destroy horde of enemies y, where y is either bandits, supermutants, robots or synths. Occasionally some beasts.
Writing was a disaster, as well as sidequests (but I started playing it like 1 week after finishing TW3 DLC so I was trying to compare those two), graphics were really mediocre, but stil enjoable game.
The thing is, you literally cannot like any RPG other than Souls games and not cause any shitpost.

I love Fallout 1 and 2, but holy shit people refuse to acknowledge that those games had some serious flaws. The combat was painfully slow to start. The graphics (even for the time) were pretty bland. The games were buggy as hell. The grid only had 6 directions to go in which meant that going up or down made you ziz-zag like you were being chased by an alligator. Minmaxing was pretty standard and some builds were objectively better than others (hardened power armor and turbo plasma rifle). Fallout 2's writing was pop-culture heavy as fuck, which got really old really fast. And plenty other things I haven't mentioned.

because it was more or less. Bethesda's games carry an M rating but are definitely aimed at an "all ages" audience. None of their stories or character relations get too complex, and even on harder difficulties gameplay systems are simple and fairly quickly allow for a player power fantasy. Bethesda's games are "open" but they don't let you do anything wrong. You can't make a choice you would regret (especially in 4). Even with gameplay - in New Vegas certain paths will rip you a new ass where as 3 and 4 are so carefully made to make sure that you can safely fuck around in any area from the beginning of the game, because Betheada's games are aimed at people who hate putting effort into gameplay or roleplaying.

This wasn't though. There is a theoretical Fallout game that actually properly lived up to the title and because Bethesda owns the rights to the franchise this got put out in its stead. This game isn't its own thing and it doesn't get the free passes a new IP would.

Fallout 3 was about as Oblivion with Guns as it gets, and this is coming from somebody who has played all of the Elder Scrolls and original Fallouts before it. Fallout 3 was disgustingly lazy and creatively bankrupt. Doing post-apocalyptic 1950's DnD shouldn't be impossible. So glad I passed on FO4.

NV does have a unique position in this issue given that it is a sister game to Fo3. It got to share in the hype. Maybe quality will win out between the two but I doubt it.

This here is what I mean. These kids believe this shit. They grew up on it. Oblivion fucking raised them like Andy Griffith and I love Lucy fucking raised baby boomers.
Look, I really do appreciate Bethesda's talent for visual world design. It's one thing they do right all the time. But right now you are absolutely letting the comforts and emotions of your past project onto Oblivion while simultaneously letting cynicism shade your view of another game.
Fo4 is a fucking shitty ass RPG and an abomination for what it does under the banner of the Fallout legacy. But it does some impressive shit through all of its foibles with visual storytelling. Oblivion may have Leyawiin which looks pretty fucking great when you mod in Open Cities but nearly every other town is a simple Y branching main street with two cul de sacs and simple fucking boxes lining either side for homes. They're cookie cutter as shit and the original game couldn't even let us experience them as a contiguous part of the game world. Fo4 only has two proper settlements but the attention to detail is there in droves. And past that I really would recommend a stealth archer run in Fo4 because the NPC banter is actually pretty great. There are nice things to be experienced in both games.
Both are shit and both have qualities that will endear themselves to the kids who inevitably play them and don't know better. As they grow they will forgive their faults with the good will they feel the games have "earned" by the parts they liked.
10 years time we will have threads about how infinite quests were a great idea and old fags just couldn't adapt to a better form of content.
We already have fucks who shamelessly believe that Fallout is better off not being a story driven RPG when that was what MADE the franchise.
