Maybe he just got really unlucky or some shit. Every time I play through I summon Tarkus just because I like seeing him wreck the golem. It's not like the Golem is too tough anyway so I don't give a shit summoning Tarkubro.
Solaire more or less solo'd the Gargoyles one time too, though that's only happened to me once. Usually he can keep one busy but never beat their ass like that one time.

Level up your weapon, also backstab them.
If you have the lightning spear use that.
Also use a shield with high lightning resist for the ones that spam lighting at you.
There is no where else you can go for now apart from the forest area to kill the moonlight butterfly boss. If you are having trouble with the snakes at Sens you will have trouble in other areas.
