Miitomo's success is thanks to Nintendo's history of creating high quality software. Nintendo's name is widely recognized and respected. However, the market nowadays demands that consoles have the support of more than one company. This is why the Wii U ultimately failed, despite being full of good games from Nintendo. People sacrifice the ability to play Nintendo games and buy a PS4, Xbone, or PC, because these platforms have support from a vast amount of game developers, and as such get lots of interesting, good games. This does not mean that people hate Nintendo. It means that they'd rather get more bang for their buck. Nintendo's hardware is no longer a good bang for the buck, but their software is still highly desired. How likely do you think it will be to find someone who emulates video games but does not emulate a single Nintendo game? This is what I mean; People want Nintendo's software, but not their hardware. Smartphones, being devices that most people buy for reasons other than playing video games, but happen to be used for gaming anyways, are devices that a huge amount of people possess. When Nintendo developed Miitomo and made people aware of the software (they did not try very hard to market Pokemon Shuffle, which is why it only had moderate success), Nintendo met the market's demand and their app was successful. This is what I think is a big factor in Miitomo's success.
Most of my friends stopped playing 3 days after release. It needs content. Why not just copy and paste everything from Tomodachi life?
It needs some kind of compelling minigame to bring people back to it daily without losing interest.

Saw it with a big banner on the Google Play Store when it came out and physically said "Ew, no" as a reflex. That's how I knew I was well and truly done with Nintendo. Packed up the 3DS and Wii U in a box and took them to the closet a few hours ago.

My argument is that I rarely play THAT MANY 3rd party games that are great. This isn't the 90's, many third party companies have become turds.
I have a PC and a Wii-U and now that I've played the FF15 demo at a friend's I don't even really care that I haven't bought a PS4 yet. The exclusive content is very weak (in my opinion).
If somebody can't into PC games then I can see investing in a PS4/Xbox One but if you can that's the best place to get that 3rd party content, which is only growing more all the time as Japanese developers and publishers finally warm up to Steam.
Nintendo meanwhile offers a reason to get their hardware, if only for their 1st party exclusives. I don't really accept that the majority of people aren't satisfied by this scenario, I'm just a regular person, I just have a PC and that covers the best 3rd party content that I find worth owning.
It shouldn't be an argument against something that not everybody can appreciate it because they need a single platform that can do more. I only have 2 platforms (not counting handhelds) and I get basically all the great content that comes out recently, with the exception of Bloodborne, which is looking inferior to Dark Souls 3 in many ways so far (but it remains to be seen of course).
