Vent is the lightest VoIP I've come across. It's pretty toaster friendly. Typefrag is the best place I've rented a server from. They have multiple platforms if vent doesn't work out.

discord is the easiest to setup. you can just give them a link and it will open in their browser.

typefrag is a website. When you go to download, just get the client. Avoid the server download because you don't need it.

Mumble is free as in freedom and uses bleeding edge codecs.
